Introduction Thesis Statement: Labour Unions play an essential role in representing the interests pertaining to the conditions of employment of every unionized employee, as well as aiding in the continuous growth of the economy. Paragraph #1 – The most common role of unions is to negotiate with employers on matters of pay, working conditions, job security, and other pertinent issues. This process is known as Collective Bargaining. – The overall goal of collective bargaining is to come to a mutual agreement between the employer and employees on such issues, and settle on a contract that will stand for a certain period of time. Paragraph #2 – In situations where an employer will not compromise to the satisfaction of the union, the union is able to implement certain actions by its members such as a strike, or a work to rule. – The overall success of such action occurs when the employer can no longer continue to operate because of loss of sales etc. and therefore reaches a compromise with the union and the union in turn sends its members back to work. Paragraph #3 – Prior to unionization, employers were able to take advantage of their employees by reducing pay, providing squalid working conditions, and dismissing employees at will in order to maximize company profit.
– By the 1940 s, the rights of workers to organize unions and bargain collectively with employers were generally recognized and incorporated into law. Paragraph # 4 – Unions have positive effects on productivity. Analysis of unionized and non-unionized establishments shows that productivity is higher in the presence of unionism than in its absence. – Because of the fact that unions are responsible for wage increases, management will respond by raising capital per worker and hiring better workers in order to increase productivity even further. Paragraph # 5 – By having a positive effect on productivity, and through wage increases to employees (providing more disposable income), unions are able to help ensure the continuing growth of the economy. Conclusions – Unions greatly benefit the workers as well as the economy as a whole. – As long as democracy and capitalism are the continue to reign in our society, unions will always be required to represent the best interests of its members in order to keep our economy in balance.
