Title: Cancer can be prevented (comment)
Cancer is a deadly disease that has taken the world by storm due to the alarming increase of its patients diagnosed with a cancer type. The topic is increasingly being discussed among governments, aid donors, communities and families. Many people believed that cancer can be avoided but sadly this is not always the outcome. This essay will argue that although cancer can be prevented, there are some cancer types that cannot be cured due to some reasons. The essay will unfold in two parts. Firstly, it will provide ways as to how cancer can be prevented. Then it will identify how cancer cannot be barred as its opposite arguments.
To begin with, early detection and awareness is the first and most significant aspect in preventing cancer. Through this process, an individual who believes to have cancer could be detected through awareness and early visit to the health centres. This could help patients receive an accurate medical advice in preventing the disease. For example, a very close relative of my mother, who had liver cancer, had visited the doctor when she was not feeling well for a week. After her visit she was told that she is suffering from liver cancer then her medications and diagnosis was given and she took care of her diet and lifestyle. According to Island Business (2007, p.1), Proven research shows that early detected cancer at stages one and two has a 90 percent survival rate. Cancer can be reduced and prevented through early detection, awareness, self-checks and frequent visit to medical profession to receive accurate diagnosis. In relation to this “all women over the age of 21 must visit the hospital for pap smear every three years” (Vanuatu Daily Post 2012, p.1) It is a vital step that those diagnose with cancer must first undertake in order to achieve full remission.

Furthermore, implement changes to lifestyle by quitting smoking and drinking alcohol makes a huge difference in preventing cancer. Smoking and drinking alcohol is now regarded to be a common practice to many regardless of their age, gender, financial background and health status. For instance, my father’s elder brother is an addictive smoker who smokes nearly five times a day. When asked as to why he smokes in that trend, he would reply that he smokes since it is affordable, readily available and he consumes it to relieve stress and to pass time. According to Medical News Today (2012 p.3), the risk of being diagnosed with lung, throat, liver and mouth cancer are considerably lowered when one chooses to quit smoking and drinking alcohol. Although, it might be difficult to quit smoking and drinking alcohol all of a sudden, but choosing to refrain from it could reduce chances of being diagnosed with a cancer type.
In addition, seeking vaccinations and medical support is a distinctive quality tool in preventing cancer. There are many vaccinations, medications and medical support available and majority of these specialise only in a particular type of cancer. For example, my aunty who was diagnosed with liver cancer was fortunate to receive the Human Papilloma Virus anti-cervical vaccine; this was only made possible after her early visit to the health centre and her effort in seeking medical support. There are only certain vaccinations available to prevent some cancers. Medical support such as systematic screening is used to identify tiny tumours at their earliest stage even in situations where no obvious symptoms are found. This process is done through Breast check up, Pap smears and others (Medical News Today 2012, p.3).

In line with this, Human Papilloma Virus anti-cervical vaccine has proven to be safe and efficient in preventing 70-80 percent of cervical cancer and over 80 million doses are being distributed worldwide (Inifiri, 2011, p.1).
It is indeed evident that vaccinations and medical support such as systematic screening has proven to be effective in preventing the identified cancer types.
However, the main barrier in eliminating cancer is the Genes or the family type. The genetic tendency of an individual is of crucial importance when considering cancer status. For instance, my aunty whom i had mentioned earlier on who had suffered from liver cancer enquired her family history on cancer and to her surprise; she found out that her grandfather and father both had suffered from liver cancer. At this point she then realised that it was not a coincidence for her to be diagnosed with liver cancer since she inherited it from her father through her genetic predisposition. According to Medical News today (2012), “There is a possibility of developing cancer later in life as a result of genetic predisposition inherited from those who had suffered from cancer in the family.” (p.2) In this case, the chance of being diagnosed with cancer is far greater than the chances of preventing it.
Additionally, other medical factors aid to the development of cancer to an individual. As people grow old, there is a high risk of being diagnosed with cancer. For example, one of the reasons why my aunty was diagnosed with liver cancer was due to her age. At the time the cancer was detected she was 75 years old. It has been argued that, “as our age grows the body’s immune system weakens due to the changes to our DNA, thus, it weakens the ability of the body to fight the virus and contributes to the growth of cancer”(Medical News Today, 2012, p.2) Age is a critical risk factor for cancer.
Moreover, reducing sunlight exposure is a feature of cancer prevention. Many people who are suffering from skin cancer are fortunate that such cancer types are preventable. According to Medical News Today (2012), “Those who are suffering from skin cancer must always be in the shadow, wearing a hat in the sun and applying sunscreen when needed.” (p.3) Staying in shade is an effective preventative measure for skin cancer.

ter> What Keeps Us Alive Can Also Kill Us Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. According to current estimates, 40 to 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. There are two different types of skin cancer: Melanomous and non-melanomous. To understand both of these terms a little better you need to be aware that your skin is ...
But this is not always the case for many who are exposed to the sun and other elements on a daily occasion that aids to skin cancer. Carcinogens are substances that is threatening and damaging to the bodies DNA system. For example, many people’s working environment such as; factories, construction sites and other areas where they are exposed to the sunlight, exhaust fumes and other carcinogens substances which contribute to the development of skin cancer. In many cases such employees are not able to find other means of employment due to some reasons, thus, they have no choice but to get themselves adapted to the environment. According to Medical News Today (2012), “Carcinogens is a group of material such as compounds in car fumes and other common materials that we come in contact with daily. In the process, these substances interfere with the body’s cells, damage it and affect the bodies’ normality functions.”(p.2) This scenario is genuine and it is difficult to prevent.
Furthermore, a significant factor in preventing cancer is having a healthy diet. Many people are not taking care of their diet and their eating lifestyle which is evident in our societies today due to the increase in Non Communicable Diseases. To illustrate, my aunty, whom I have been mentioning, has a big appetite; she would eat anything that comes her way, all that she needs is that she must fill her tummy. After two years of her diagnosis with cancer, she changed her diet and lifestyle of eating. According to Medical News (2012), “Medical professions suggest meals that are low in fat and prosperous in fruits and vegetables including whole grain. These meals are crucial in view of the fact that what we eat is in relation to the infection.” (p.3) What we consume is essential as it will either positively or negatively contribute to the disease.
