Two main types of leadership are transactional and transformational. Transactional leadership is concerned with the end result and involves a leader providing direction to others. Transformational leadership is concerned with the process and requires participation from all involved. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of leadership. The circumstances of a given situation may require leaders to use one type of leadership over another. Another way of looking at it, actual – giving guidance or direction, like a teacher being a leader to a student, as in the phrase “the President has provided satisfactory leadership”. Potential – the capacity or ability to lead, as in the phrase “she could have exercised effective leadership”; or in the concept “born to lead”. Leadership can have a formal aspect (as in most political or business leadership) or an informal one (as in most friendships).
Speaking of “leadership” (the abstract term) rather than of “leading” (the action) usually implies that the entities doing the leading have some “leadership skills” or competencies.
There is a great deal of talk about loyalty from the bottom to the top. Loyalty from the top down is even more necessary and much less prevalent.

Since I have had Asshole bosses, and Bosses that I would throw myself in front of a moving bus for, I have watched, and attempted to learn from their behaviors. I learned from a great boss who empathized with me when I had a problem, which I really appreciated, so I attempt to follow her example and be more empathetic. But on the other hand, I worked for screamers, and learned that people don’t respond the way screamers usually want, so I learned from that. Screaming produces a negative effect. Rather than accomplishing the task, people who work for screamers simply learn tactics that attempt to negate the screamers behavior.

Motivation alone is not sufficient. Organizational citizenship is a better measure, because it involves behaviors that are helpful to others, and the organization. Fulfilled and higher performance employees are objective leaders should attempt to achieve. Are company objectives being implemented in a timely manner with full employee support? Can emergencies be met with a minimum of friction between employees? How do the employees deal with problems? Are they empowered?
4. Define the need for power and tell how it is related to leadership. Is the need for power essential to leading? Why or why not? Explain. The need for power varies between people, and as the book notes, some derive a greater pleasure than others in obtaining and exercising power. These individuals seek out opportunities to gain power, and then exercise it. The text lists 2 kinds of power, personalized, and socialized power. Persons who enjoy personal power tend to be self centered, impetuous, and reckless. Social power is identified as a more grown-up approach, and is signified by service to a higher set of goals, and is usually selfless towards those goals.
