I believe that young public leaders are less effective because they don’t have enough experience or no experience at all because a public leader should have gone through certain life experiences such as being able to lead a group of people and inspire people to want to follow their lead. This comes with experience and proper training. Young public leaders do not have the experience to be versatile and make tough decisions regarding issues that are going on in the world today such as economic issues, national and or state security issues, and community issues.
One thing young public leaders have not had enough of is time to build on their people skills and understanding the different cultures there are to deal with. A lot of the young public leaders are fresh out of school and they don’t have enough experience along with sufficient training. In the public sphere The Guardian, there was a survey taken that showed 1,515 managers believed that their line managers were ineffective at performing their jobs. The managers believed this to be scary when the line managers were going to be in charge of highly technical projects and budgets.
The managers learned that the senior managers would have to attend and take leadership classes to make sure that he or she had the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to proceed with developing projects and budgets. The company believes that this is a good start, but they believe that there are greater measures that have to be taken to ensure their lead managers are not continually labeled as incompetent and ineffective (theguarduan, 2012).

There was an interesting point made on the forum “On the Move”, which states that the demands that are placed on our current leaders are growing and the ualities needed for effective leadership is a quality that is in need. The article further states that even though young leaders enter the public arenas committed and full of energy, a lot of the young leaders lower their expectation for what lies ahead of them because of a lack of mentoring and disillusionment and doubt of what he or she expected their position to be. Up and coming young public leaders have to be challenged and supported if he or she is going to succeed in meeting the growing demands placed on the public and non-profit sectors (on the move, 2003).
Another interesting forum was N2Growth, in which they discuss 12 Ways to Spot Ineffective Leadership. This is interesting because the forum points out ineffective issues that are discussed in Daft (2011).
One issue that young leaders face is not having enough character. They have not had the chance to develop a character required to be a leader in the public forum. A leader who lacks character will stand the test of time in which people put his or her character through a test to see what type of person that leader is.
It does make a difference as to how smart a leader is, if he or she does not have the ethical standing to have an upstanding character he or she will fall prey to unethical situations. There is lack of performance. A leader who does not have a positive track record falls prey to harsh criticism because he or she does not have anything to show as far as the things he or she has accomplished. Someone who has a record of positive performances has a better chance at succeeding in the public arena as a public leader.
If a leader has a self-serving attitude and does not realize that he or she has to put service above self will not get the trust, confidence and loyalty that are required to have people follow them. Lack of focus and follow through are also detrimental to a young public leader’s success. If he or she lacks the attention and focus to follow through and pay attention to issues plaguing their community they will fail. Leaders who do not take positive action on an issue that concerns the public, or who can’t deliver on promises that have been made will not succeed in the public arena.

I believe that things are the same as they were 50 years ago. People have always believed that young people were not competent enough to run for office and be a positive leader. People have believed that young people are incompetent, inconsistent, and have childlike tendencies. Things have not changed in the last 50 years and for good reason. There are situations such as bribery, embezzlement, and sex scandals. After reviewing the articles to support this analysis, I believe strongly that young leaders are not in a position to run the country or their community. They need life experiences that expose them to certain issues that plague our communities and nation.
