The world is right-handed. In literature terms, it is a metaphor and an exaggeration at the same time. The whole world is not exactly composed of entirely right-handed people, but the sheer number of right handed people makes this statement a probable one. In philosophical terms, this is a fallacious statement (hasty generalization) because it quickly assumes that the whole world is right-handed. The reality is, though the number of left-handed persons in the world is not equal or greater than the number of right-handed persons, they do exist.
Their seemingly insignificant number led to the right-handed population’s insensitivity—thinking that lefty’s are not having any troubles in a predominantly right-handed world. Difficulties of Left Handed Persons Who better to tell us what difficulties left-handed persons are than they themselves? A survey conducted by Left-Handers’ Day (2008).
lefthandersday. com reveals that there are a lot of common things that left-handed people find difficult in their everyday lives. Most common are the position of things, right-handed-biased equipment or rules, and dealing with right-handed persons.
For example, a lot of left-handed people find it awkward to shake with the right hand. Unless someone has experienced in scouting, since the Scouts teaches shaking hands using the left hand, shaking hands is usually done with the right hand, at least for right-handed people. Left-oriented people also have trouble when passing by other people’s paths. The “general rule” is the keep right rule, but this is a biased rule geared towards the convenience of right-handed people, as lefties find themselves in awkward situations when passing by people on the street (Left-Handers’ Day, 2008).
The Essay on Symbolic Expre Hand Left Human
That the right hand is favoured for practical use by most members of the human race seems, from the evidence, to be un disputable. That much pan-cultural knowledge seems to legitimize this with specific forms and methods of suggesting superiority to the right hand also seems to be the case. It is this symbolic expression of the dexterity differential which holds the fascination of the discipline ...
If doing an impromptu cha-cha on the street is not embarrassing enough, left-handed people, more often than not, unconsciously take the glass belonging to the person to their left. “One really embarrassing thing I do at dinner parties is drink from [the glass of] the person next to [me]. I just reach out with my left hand and lift and [it’s] not until I see that I’m getting strange looks that I [realize] what I’m doing,” recalls Evelyn Rose in the survey (Left-Handers’ Day, 2008).
Probably, the most awkward of all left-handed related problems is during an intimate, or at least what is supposed to be intimate moment (Left-Handers’ Day, 2008).
People would normally tilt their heads to their dominant sides—lefties with right-handed partners, therefore, lose the seriousness of the moment. It is not just in passing someone on the street or kissing that give lefties awkward situations. In a world where majority of the population are right-handed, manufacturers almost always cater to the right-handed customer. Pens, can openers, computers, power tools, and scientific equipment are just some of the things that are mass produced for the right handed (Left-Handers’ Day, 2008).
One correspondent is quoted in saying, “The fine focus [on microscopes] is always on the right!!
It’s probably just me, but I use them all day and it drives me mad” (Left-Handers’ Day, 2008).
These things were conceptualized by the designers to sell to right-handed customers, and almost every time, they do not design something for the lefties since they only encompass a small number of the demography (Left-Handers’ Day, 2008).. Perhaps, the best example that shows how difficult life can be for a lefty is the orientation of armchairs in schools. In an article by Mei Flower (2005), a left-handed student complains about the ill-effects of using a right-handed armchair.

“I am a lefty, and [… ] a very good student. However, on timed tests, I have always been running against the clock and been less able to produce an amount of written material in comparison to my right-handed schoolmates. We are handicapped on very tightly timed tests” (Flower, 2005).
They run out of time faster because it takes more time to write down things in an awkward position. Conclusion Left-handed people are really disadvantaged in a world where most things are created and organized to suit the lifestyle of right-handed people.
The left handed people have spoken out their firsthand experiences regarding the difficulties they experience. The consistency and similarities that they complain about confirm the validity of the argument.
