Currently I am seeking licensure in professional counseling in North Carolina. North Carolina has strenuous process for completion of licensure requirements, there are several components that must be completed prior to submission of application for licensure. All educational credits being utilized for licensure must be documented on an official transcript from a regionally accredited institution If an individual seeking licensure embarked on the pursuit of licensure prior to July 1. 2009 the applicant will need 48 semester hours If an individual seeking licensure embarked on the pursuit of licensure prior to July 1, 2013 but after June 30, 2009 the applicant will need 54 semester hours.
If an individual seeking licensure embarked on the pursuit of licensure after June 30, 2009 the applicant will need 60 semester hours. Upon completion of the educational requirements an individual seeking LPC licensure must partake in two separate examinations the first examination must be one of the following: National Counselor Exam (NCE) – provided by the National Board for Certified Counselors National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE) – provided by the National Board for Certified Counselors Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Exam (CRC) – provided by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification The second exam is less strenuous it cover the law and ethical codes that govern Licensed Professional Counselors.

Upon successful completion of the required 3000 hours of supervision an LPC-A is eligible to apply for full licensure earning the credentials of Licensed Professional Counselor. With the credentials of LPC a counselor can embark on various careers. The scope of practice for a LPC includes assessment and diagnosing both mental health and substance abuse symptoms. It is not within the scope of practice for an LPC to complete psychological or psychiatric evaluations.
