We are the descendents of the Dutch, there for we have many similar customs and beliefs. I must begin with a brief history of our people to give an understanding of how and why we are the way we are. Many of our customs and beliefs are shaped around the way we have lived, for example many years of traveling in harsh terrains have led us to believe in god, for without him we would have never made it as far as we did. These beliefs are known as the doctrines derived from Calvinism. They are also taught at The Dutch Reformed Church. These ideas pretty much state that we believe it is our god given right to own land and slaves, for god himself helped us to get here and achieve our goal. This is one reason why we do not get along so well with the British for they abolished slavery in eighteen fourteen. Back to our customs, the harsh traveling life led us to wear tough clothing that could withstand harsh terrain and also have light clothing to survive through the oppressive weather.
Our clothing also derived from strong European traditions of eloquent clothing and lavish garments. The education process was important to us for we knew a strong nation was built on knowledge. We eat the foods that are more or less in this area and maintain a similar diet to what we had in Europe. Our city, Cape Town, was a superior place for trading which benefited us greatly. We believe we are a strong nation who has undergone many hardships.
