I chose to the listen to the song Temporarily Destabilized by Chon because I have always been a fan of progressive metal and that genre is not only strikingly difficult to play, but very technical as far as timing and tempo is concerned. Chon is a 4 piece unsigned semi-frenetic, jazz-tinged instrumental progressive band from San Diego California consisting of four high school students. They currently only have an EP out, called Mountains of Creation. The drummer is the youngest, fourteen years old. The rest of the members are about sixteen or seventeen years old. They have two guitarists, a bassist, and a drummer.
My first response to hearing it all the way through once is that it was really catchy, and up-beat. It kept a fast tempo and a wide range of keys. The song consists of mostly break beats, for instance the guitars and drum will be playing one rhythm, and in the middle of playing the one rhythm, they stop short of completing it and start a new rhythm. They do this consistently throughout the song. It keeps me alert and keeps me waiting for the new melody. The rhythms are all noticeable; I can hear each not being played by the guitar.
The second time I listening to it I focused mostly on the guitars. The two guitarists are really talented. They sweep the guitar and play many different ranges and scales. They play every string on the fret board and progressively jump through scales. The guitars are the rhythm of the song. The bassist follows the guitars completely. The two guitarists will play in harmonic unison until one guitarist breaks free of the rhythm and solos, playing many notes over the melody of the song. One example occurs at 2:00 and leads on for about the next twenty seconds. The solo guitarist acts almost as a vocalist, because it is the lead instrument of this song and it catches an immense amount of attention. The guitars are playing at a very high tempo, and are in standard E tuning.

This is the second day consecutively I am listening to Temporarily Destabilized. I notice the decrescendo from 2:30-2:35 when the song begins to decrescendo. It calms down to a piano volume and only the guitar plays a rhythm. Around 2:47 the rest of the instruments join in to accompany the guitar rhythm, setting up a steady melody for a guitar solo that begins shortly after. The guitar solo is very talented. The guitarist is playing triplets and sweeping the guitar in a high pitch. The guitars both have a distortion effect being used I can hear. It puts a melancholy sense to the song. The guitars are playing very fast and in 1:15 they’re playing in unison.
My fourth time listening to it I wanted to pick apart the song technically. The music is beat-oriented because it has a rhythm. The drums are keeping the rhythm and the guitars are playing mostly melody along with the bass. The song is definitely dissonant, because it has no structure. It does not have a chorus, nor does it have a home key. The drummer does a good job keeping up the fast tempo and the cymbals he hits stand out over the other instruments. The bassist has no solos and does not have any dialogue with any instruments. The bass strictly accompanies the melodies of the guitar. The guitar is what keeps the song moving, it’s what expresses the emotion in the song.
This is the third day I’m listening to Chon consecutively, my fifth time listening to the song. I want to appreciate the song on the listening session. These kids are very talented, because they are playing mature melodies and have a wide range of dynamics. They do not stick with repetition, every thirty seconds a new melody and rhythm are made. Remembering the timing and the notes they play is very difficult. They have put in much practice into this song, and the very over the top solo puts their talent into perspective. Both guitarists solo throughout the song.
The Essay on Conversation Audience Melody Solo
Is language, or the actual act of speaking, solely created by the organs of speech It is possible that some scholars might agree that communication is not totally vocal, yet how many of these same scholars would agree that language is not restricted to the vocalized speech that is so common in everyday life This paper will argue that music, specifically instrumental jazz, can be characterized as ...
My sixth time listening to it I paid closer attention to the structure of the song. They open up with a very low monotone rhythm to catch the listener’s attention, and transition into one of their main rhythms they keep up for about a minute. This rhythm is played by the bass and drums, and the guitars are soloing in unison over it. They pick up the tempo around 1:37 and slow down around 2:15 when another melody is born. This is the last melody of the song, and is played throughout the rest of the song mostly with a guitar soloing on top of it. They come to a very abrupt end. The ending sounds like an end, but with no chorus or repetition it sounded like they could have kept on playing.
