Little Girls and Wolves The ravening wolf theme is reflected in the Russian tale Peter and the Wolf, and The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids, but the theme is as old as Jonah and the Whale. Miss Mulock pseudonym of Dinah Craik, 19th century female novelist, author of the Little Lame Prince, published an anthology of childrens fairy tales in 1853. Miss Mulocks version of Little Red Riding Hood with illustrations by Gustave Dore is quoted here. The tale is a contrast between the safe village and the dangerous forest. Little Red Riding Hood, a girl in a red hooded cape or cloak, walks through the woods to deliver food to her sick grandmother. The story portrays the wolf that wants to catch the girl and eat her, but he is not observed doing in this in the presence of others. When he approaches, the girl tells the wolf where she is going.
The wolf goes to her grandmother’s house and gains entry. After devouring the grandmother, he waits for the girl. The girl arrives and is aware that something is strange. A hunter comes to her rescue and cuts into the wolf. Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother emerge unharmed. In Miss Mulocks version, she and the hunter fill the wolf’s body with heavy stones, which kills him. Numerous versions and interpretations of Little Red Riding Hood have been rendered throughout history, but in Miss Mulocks version, the poor child did not know how dangerous it is to stop and speak to wolves.
Bruno Bettelheim recast Little Red Riding Hood in his essay Little Red Cap and a Pubertal Girl in classic Freudian analysis. Alan Dundes summarizes Bettelheim as feeling the fairy tale educates, supports, and liberates the emotions of children. The huntsman cutting open the wolf to Bettelheim was the “rebirth” of girl who will no longer foolishly listened to a wolf, but Bruno Bettelheims analysis was actually much deeper. The Company of Wolves by Angela Carter, Neil Jordan, and Sarah Patterson, won awards for best film and best special effects. The movie based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood was nominated for four awards based on costume design, make up, production design/art direction, and special visual effects. The company of wolves is set in modern times within the dreams of a young girl, Rosaleen. Rosaleen dreams that she lives in a fairytale forest with her parents and her sister. When Rosaleen returns to her parents, she finds she must deal with the advances of an amorous boy. Rosaleen and the boy take a walk through the forest. The boy discovers that cattle have come under attack of a wolf. The villagers catch and kill the wolf whose corpse transforms into a human being. Rosaleen encounters the huntsman in the snow-covered forest, when she takes a basket of goods through the woods to her grandmother’s cottage.
An attractive huntsman challenges her to find her way to her grandmother’s house before he can. The hunter arrives at Rosaleen’s grandmother’s house first. He reveals his bestial nature and eats her. Rosaleen discovers the carnage, but she desires the hunter. Ultimately, the villagers arrive at the house looking for the werewolf, only to discover a transformed Rosaleen. The red cloak was also a classic signal of a prostitute in 17th century France a “working girl.” A Colombian charity recently used this theme in a poster campaign that showed various fairy tale characters reduced to child labor with Red Riding Hood, a child prostitute. Red Riding Hood has been seen as a parable of sexual maturity. The red cloak symbolizes the blood of the menstrual cycle and “dark forest” of womanhood.

The cloak symbolized the hymen. The wolf threatens her virginity. The wolf symbolizes a man, a would be lover, seducer or sexual predator. Little Red Riding Hood stereotypes little girls as good, the wolf as bad. As for how are men treated in Little Red Riding Hood, little boys do not identify with little girls. The male like creature is the wolf. The only other male in the story is the woodsman at the end.
Reading the same story to a little boy, he asks, Why doesnt Red Riding Hood have to tell the wolf she is sorry? Bettelheim (1977, p. 174) says the male figure is seen in two opposite forms, the dangerous seducer, and as the destroyer of the grandmother, or as the strong rescuing responsible father figure. In the Company of Wolves, one might ask if Little Red Riding Hood is culpable in the murder of her grandmother. She deliberately told the wolf where her grandmother lived and that she was alone in a secluded place. A little boy does feel that little girls are not as well behaved as they are said to be. Bruno Bettelheim (1977, p. 167) in The Uses of Enchantment describes Little Red Riding Hoods oral characteristics.
Then he portrays her development through the genital stage. Perhaps both the fairy tale and the company of wolves is the story of a young girls struggle with the same sex parent and grandparent. In both stories, her mother sent her away through the forest. In the Company of Wolves, she is sent away after the death of her cherished sister. Searching for the wolf who killed her sister, later her grandmother, the villagers find Rosaleen or Red Riding Hood. Is it possible that Rosaleen killed her sister and is now knowingly with the man who killed her grandmother? The woodsman is a father figure keeping the little girl safe.
In another version he is a desirable man, but a villain. In both versions he killed the wolf. Is the woodsman a cold blood killer who killed a man in the company of wolves? The male role in both versions is subject to interpretation. There is no positive male role model through out either story. The demise of the wolf is described as well meted punishment (Bettelheim, 1977, p. 169).
Bruno Bettelheim says the wolf did not threaten the girl in woods because the woodsman were in the woods, but that is not stated in Miss Mulocks version of the fairy tale. Bettelheim quotes Perrault, the moral to be drawn from the story is that nice girls ought not to listen to all kinds of people. He goes on to say that the gentle wolves are the most dangerous of all. They follow young girls and try to enter their homes. The fear of being devoured is in all versions of the tale. In the fairy tale, the house in the woods and her parents house is the same house perceived differently because her psychological situation changed. Red Riding Hood is helplessly incapacitated by her thoughts and actions. Little Red Riding punishes the wolf, who desires her. In The Company of Wolves, she desires the seductive wolf.
