The online gaming industry has increased dramatically since technology’s capabilities have increased. The current protocol for online gaming is UDP because of less latency. If it were an FTP protocol it would have more latency because FTP headers are larger in size and the retransferring of files would populate the bandwidth too much and it would make the online gaming experience less enjoyable.
Basically, the company who made the game has a server that all the players connect through a series of Central Offices that could be known as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), which connect through a series of Local Exchange Carriers which route all the data to and from each Interexchange Carriers (IXC) which finally deliver each packet to all the gamers out there. For example, my personal favorite game called DC Universe Online will have a server out in California which connect to their CO and release all their data out to the world.
Whenever you and another person are playing online games, you’re not actually sending out massive amounts of information over the internet. Most of the graphically intense displays you see on the screen are actually on your local machine. It’s not explosions being sent over the physical wire itself. The only packets and things your machine is sending over the wire is the actual positioning of where you are on the map, your direction, and vertical positioning as well.
The process of the entire file transfer is completely overseen and ruled by the server. Their server is connected to the Central Offices which connects to the Local Exchange Carriers which is all interconnected to Interexchange Carriers which allow all customers the ability to connect to the server. The customers connect through their routers, all the way to their CO’s, to their LEC’s, finds a way to the IXC’s and is then routed to the direction of the game server.
