Most of you know who Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, The Hulk, etc, are but, do you know the person behind the hero? How about their enemies? Do you know the person behind the villain? One of Captain America’s greatest enemies was his best friend who was mind washed into believing Cap was his enemy, he committed suicide upon the return of his memories, The Hulk is his own enemy, he fights his inner demons on a day to day basis. Thor’s enemy is his own brother Loki, who is probably one of the most well know supervillain and the most misunderstood. Loki is the son of Laufey, King of the Frost Giants. When Loki was a babe, Odin King of Asgard killed Loki’s father in single combat. Odin, cursed by his father to adopted the son of a king and raise him as his own, found Loki. Due to Loki’s small asgardian size, Loki’s father had hidden him away in shame. Odin took the boy, out of a combination of pity, to appease his father, and because he was the son of a worthy king slain in honorable combat, and raised him as his son alongside his biological son Thor.
Throughout their childhood and later years, Loki was resentful of the differences in which he and Thor were treated by the citizens of Asgard. The Asgardians value great strength, tenacity, and bravery in battle above all things, and Loki is inferior to his Thor in those areas. What he lacked in size and strength, however, he made up for in power and skill, particularly as a sorcerer. As Loki grew to adulthood, his natural talent for causing mischief would earn him a nickname as the “God of Lies and Mischief”. His mischievousness eventually became malice as his hunger for power and revenge grew stronger. Several times he tried to use tricks to get rid of Thor, for instance, telling him to guard a hole in the wall he had made. In time, his reputation grew from being a playful and mischievous trickster to the “God of Evil”. Over the centuries, Loki attempted to destroy Asgard and exterminate Thor quite a few times. He even helped the Storm Giant Ghan to escape Thor, Loki planning to get a debt from him later. Also aiding other enemies of Asgard, planning to take over.

Loki compiled a very large criminal record in Asgard, and was frequently exiled. Now, Loki sounds really evil at this point but he’s not. Loki’s main problems were caused by him feeling inferior to Thor who he had thought his real brother for centuries only to find he wasn’t. Odin didn’t help much either, he pushed Thor more than his did Loki because Thor would one day become King of Asgard. To Loki, he thought they didn’t even consider him a part of the family. He thought that Odin only took him in out of pity, that they really didn’t love him. Most of the Asgardian citizens don’t even consider him their prince which he still is, even if he’s been exiled, striped of his power which he always gets back, and put in prison half a million times.
Despite all he’s done he is always welcomed back because, Thor and Odin do love him and will always continue to forgive him, which makes Loki think they’re only doing it out of pity and starts this whole vicious cycle over again. Loki however really just wants their love and attention because he can’t seem to get it through his thick skull that he already has their love and attention. So, he goes and does really drastic things to get their attention and tries to one-up Thor to prove to Odin that he is as good as Thor or even better. Many examples are of him attacking Earth, his most famous attempt was setting the Destroyer on Earth, which Loki attacks because Thor’s lover is a human and he’s jealous. He almost completely destroys the human race on multiple occasions, just to get Thor’s attention. Loki’s punishments are not that hard, mainly because most Asgardians believe humans are inferior.
For example, in the 2012 movie The Avengers, Loki is never punished for killing humans or trying to take over Earth, he’s punished for the destruction of an entire race and the almost annihilation of another. And Loki hates that his punishments are so light because he believes Odin doesn’t see him as a big enough threat to keep locked up or permanently banish him. When, Odin loves Loki too much to punish him they way he should for, if he did, Loki would be executed by the combination of all the things he’s done and neither Odin or Thor can stand to lose him. Loki’s mindset is that he isn’t truly loved, that no one can or will ever love him. Especially since he loves them very much and they don’t seem to love him back. This has twisted him up inside, made him power hungry and think that he’s been wronged in some way.

What Loki needs is for someone to show they truly do love him and care for him, he needs someone to forgive him, to tell him he can stop throwing temper tantrums because that’s all this is. Like a child, he’s throwing a temper tantrum because he thinks he’s not getting enough attention or love when really, they’re trying to teach him that continuing to throw these temper tantrums will get him nowhere nor, will it get their affections. Considering all he’s done, Loki isn’t the best guy in the world but he’s not evil.
He will always be considered evil by people when they really don’t even try to dig below the surface and see him for him. They assume he’s evil given all he’s done which, is a fair assumption but they’re wrong. He wants what all of us want, a family and a place to call home. But most of all, he wants to be loved in return. I feel sorry for Loki because, he will never see how much he is truly loved.
