I recently finished the book “Lorna Doone.” It was, in my opinion a wonderful tale. The author,R.D. Blackmore did a wonderful job of spinning this yarn, its full of action, romance, and suspense. You can really believe in the characters. In the story, John Ridd is taken home one day at school, by his friend, a hired hand at the family farm old John Fry. The Doones,a terrifying band of robbers and outlaws, had killed his father and now he was placed with the responsibility of Plover Barrows farm.
One day, while fishing John discovers a water slide, curious he climbs it, finding the beautiful Lorna Doone on the other side. She saves him from being discovered by the Doones.John returns to the valley of the Doones seven years later. He falls in love with Lorna and visits her often. One of those times, she brings him to her “Rock House” and tells him her sad story. John is forced to go to London and misses his last chance to see Lorna before he leaves on his journey. About two months later he returns to Devon. When he goes to see Lorna, she is to marry Carver Doone, the fierce strong and horrid man who killed her cousin Lord Alan Brandir. At this point in the story,Annie,John’s sister manages to figure out who John is in love with, even though he had told no one of even being in love..let alone Lorna. Another two months pass by, and John tells his mother of Lorna.
Suddenly Lorna seems to dissapear, and John sets off to find her, fearing for her safety in the sorrowful valley. When he finds her he learns that her grandfather, Lord Ensor Doone,is sick and dying. Without his protection, Lorna could be in serious trouble. John agrees that seven crows nests, in a nearby tree should be used as signals. If there is only six, then Lorna is in need of John, if there is only five then Lorna has been taken away by Carver Doone. When John next checks on the crow’s nests, only six remain. Its turns out that old Sir Ensor Doone is dying and wishes to see John before he passes away. Sir Ensor tells John never to see nor even think of Lorna again.
