The ivory white sand felt as soft as baby powder between my toes. The ocean’s shades emanated to shimmer from turquoise green to aqua to a midnight blue, and the palm trees gracefully silhouetted against the morning sky. I was strolling back to my beach house to get ready to go boating. I rummaged through my closet, selecting my blue and white swim trunks and a light blue T-shirt, and hurried to change and set out for my big adventure.
The crystal waters revealed a school of blue and yellow fish darting beneath my boat. The clear waters showed branches of seaweed swayed gently with the current. Multicolored coral served as camouflage for a multitude of sea life. Floating on the top of the ocean was one thing, but being able to witness the teeming world beneath the surface was another. I was almost directly over the reef when a large fish emerged from between the weeds. It was mesmerizing to see of how easily it was able to glide and maneuver its body through the tight spaces of the coral and rocks. I had been rowing for about a half hour, and had trouble just trying to keep the boat straight against the gentle current.
The boat was about eight feet long; it was peacock blue with the bottom a milky white. Designs shaped like fiery waves that were the color of persimmon orange and outlines in ruby red were on each side of the boat. The boat was only equipped with a small plastic bailer, for good reasons. With only about 16 inches of free board, the boat was continually taking in water. I was still rowing effortlessly through the slightly buffeting waves. My objective was to get to the other side of the inland area.

Putting on my headphones, I pushed the “play” button on my Discman, turned the volume to “max” and listened to Sublime pound through. I felt the sun beating down on my head and warming my body. It was going to be a scorcher. Marveling at the clear blue sky, the shimmering palms of the trees that adorned the peaceful island, my senses were filled with fragrances of the many exotic flowers and the sight of the sun-lovers adorning the ivory-white beach, giving it a flamboyant splash of color.
Once again, I focused on the tip of the island to see how I was progressing. It was becoming more of a struggle to move against the current. I had begun to row more strenuously and realized with some surprise that I didn’t appear to be getting any closer to my destination. In fact, I had the distinct feeling I was moving further from the shore. I didn’t seem to be able to maneuver the boat around the tip and I couldn’t understand why. I reached into my bag for another cd and continued to row aimlessly. “But, what the heck!” I told myself. I always enjoyed a good challenge. I then began rowing harder and with more determination.
A brightly colored fishing boat passed close to my starboard side. Several fisherman waved, and I detected questioning glances on their sun-parched faces. I couldn’t understand why they were staring so intensely at me. Possibly, it was becoming accustomed to the probing eyes and bewildered looks the local often bestowed on the tourist. After all, they really do think we’re all “crazy”.
I became so absorbed in my music that I hadn’t noticed that I had drifted even farther than I had intended and suddenly found myself in deep waters. It became all too obvious that there was no way I was going to be able to row around the point. I decided to call it a day. It was about 1:00 p.m., and I could be back just in time for a late lunch at the Floating Barge. This was a popular gathering place with the best clam chowder, and a beautiful view of the ocean. Turning the boat around, I headed back. My mouth began watering at the tantalizing thought of a large cold drink. My stomach rumbled, reminding me how hungry I was. I had skipped breakfast this morning. Pictures of my favorite foods began dancing in my head, and soon my thoughts became obsessed.
The Essay on Boat Dive Back Water
Beauty, Tranquility, and having fun are all things that pull me back underwater every summer. Being deep underwater can calm my soul, letting me enjoy the wonderful scenes that only can be found under the rippling waves of the sea. About two years ago; we were in the keys on the southern tip on Florida, and had just boarded a fairly homely dive boat for my first ocean dive ever. My Father and I ...
By this time, the novelty of my adventure was wearing off, and the need for a challenge no longer existed. I wondered if I should return the boat now and walk up the beach, but I rejected the idea because it meant I’d have to swim the last 100 yards out to the Floating Barge, and I would arrive looking like a drowned rat. No, I would row all the way and secure the boat to the barge.
I felt like I was making headway since I was almost positive I could see the front door of my beach house. Then slowly the realization that although I was making a concerted effort to row to shore, I was, in fact, farther away than ever. Feelings of confusion and wonderment tingled in every inch of my body. What on earth was happening?! Why was I not making any progress towards home? My heart began to beat faster. Warning signs flashed through my mind, and I desperately wanted someone to know I needed help. But no one was in earshot of me, and the shore was receding from my view at an alarming pace. I was in trouble! I nervously ripped off my earphones and tossed them in my bag. I began rowing with every inch of strength and courage I had.
The once enchanting sea that beckoned my presence was now turning its face to me and showing its fury, and I was terrified. The once tranquil surface was now choppy and the white caps appeared to be reaching up to grab me. The wind snapped and whipped up series of waves that rocked and tossed the boat. I fought with all my might to keep it upright.
In spite of the fear I was feeling, my mind conjured up pictures of undersea life. I saw a giant manta ray, its huge wings oscillating as it rampaged through the waves with its blood-red eyes that shimmered through the water. Its tar-black body glided in the water, giving the appearance of a solar eclipse. A carnivorous electric blue starfish clung with its sucking tube feet to an isolated reef, while a school of shiny neon fish darted nervously in and out of a cluster of sea anemones. Suddenly an enormous, depraved rainbow-speckled fish appeared with razor sharp teeth and lemon-yellow eyes that glazed sinfully at me. Then suddenly, with lightning speed, jaws opened; it skillfully moved in for the kill and disappeared between the seaweed with a gullet full of neon fish. I prayed to God a wave wouldn’t toss me into the path of these dreadful creatures. The mere thought petrified me.
The Essay on Color of Water Analysis
The book is more like two intertwining books than just a single book. It switches between two points of views, Ruth McBride and her son James McBride. I gained control of my thought and realized it was just my over-active imagination that had conjured up those sights. The threat of the angry sea was real, though, and feeling totally frustrated, I put my paddles down and clung tightly to the edges of the boat.
How was I going to get out of this mess! I was being swept out to sea at an alarming speed. All the distance I had just covered was in vain. The strength of the curling waters was more than a match for me. With a deep sigh of desperation, I again picked up my paddles and stroked furiously at the waters, only this time my efforts were spurred on by my rising fears. Every stroke now was in direct opposition to the current. My hands became numb with the friction of the splintered boards against my palms, leaving them raw and bleeding.
The sun had turned from primrose to flaming orange. I had only one and a half hours left before darkness. Boracay suddenly seemed a very long ways away. The only image visible now was a sliver of white sand glistening like a small diamond in the darkening distance.
I was excruciatingly tired; my body was unable to endure the demands I was making on it. How had I let this situation get out of control? I racked my brain for a solution. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a thumping underneath my boat. Oh God, no! There’s sharks! I hate sharks! No, what will become of me now? NOOOO!
I screamed and sat straight up, opening my eyes to the most wonderful splash of designs and colors which decorated the navy blue sky above me. They popped and hissed as the designs gently fell towards the ground. Fireworks! Then I remember the island was celebrating the festival of lights. I was consumed with the feelings of joy, relief, disappointment and embarrassment… for my challenging adventure had turned out to be nothing but a dream, not more than two hundred yards from shore.[/color:cab319f73f]
