The movie Love & Basketball was very well made. It had many segments
which could be analyzed in many different ways. The most important symbolism
throughout this movie in my eyes is that of a woman’s role in sports being belittled
and not taken as serious as that of a man. From a young age Monica was not taken
serious on the basketball court, and told to change her “boyish” ways at home. The
boys felt that because she was a girl she wouldn’t be able to keep up with them.
After proving her point that she could play, and was to be taken serious the boys

playing or even being accepted on college basketball teams many differences are
made between girls and boys as far as scholarships, scouts, and the particular
sport. It is a proven fact that boys tend to have larger scholarship amounts than
girls, and although many people see this as fair because, “Boys play harder!” Or
“Boys play physical sports.”, the amount of strength and skill is equal. Scouts
are scarce when it comes to scouting girls in athletics, but you can find dozens of
scouts at events for boys.
