Three abstract words that I have chosen to provide personal definitions of are love, power, and pain. Even on the surface, these three words seem to have deep associations with each other, which is true.
Love is a state of mind that reveals something very true and fundamental about you. Love, like everything else, is a bit ‘selfish’, in that it is an affirmation of a person’s need for acceptance. The most important kind of love is the love for another person, or persons. When a person loves, he realizes how far his limits are when trying to accomplish something for the sake of someone else. Love is a mixture of emotions that tells a person that there is something in life worth living for. Love is not just a means, but also an end in itself. Love is the best feeling there is.
Like love, power is somewhat selfish, but more blatantly so. Power is the ability to modify one’s environment to suit oneself. The fact that the word is frequently followed by “over” (as in “power over…”), suggests its intimate association with the subjugation of others. Thus, when you have power, you are the subjugator, and something, or someone, is the subjugated. This is not necessarily negative, however; to have power over yourself, for example, is to be able to choose your own path through life.
Power is especially significant in relationships with other people (particularly, loving someone typically entails allowing that someone to have power over you, in some way).
To have power over others is to be able to change the behavior of others, to some degree, for your own benefit. With power comes the knowledge that you can step on others whenever needed, to achieve your goals. The threat of pain in some form is often how power is manifested. Pain is an effective weapon of power, because it is how the mind becomes aware of damage (this damage can be physical or psychological).

Pain is an unpleasant feeling that reminds us that we exist. Pain is also the measure of reality—hence the reason you pinch yourself to see if you are dreaming. Pain is a reminder that we are weak and fragile, because the purpose of pain is to make us learn to avoid potential harm. It reminds us to be careful. It is sometimes also a necessary consequence of love.
