Mall Culture by Steven Shephard Summary The author starts the essay with pondering on having a magic and give the wants of every individual. He wonders what would happen if he could offer the things that everyone wants. Will that make them content and stop the habit of wanting material things that sometimes they cannot have? The most probable answer he thought is no, because that is life. Life will come to a stop when everyone ceases to desire things that life offers to them. This is according to his observation, and that was supported with a fact when he was able to listen to an interview (over a radio) about a fashion magazine editor. The editor insinuated that in order for them to sell their magazine, they encourage their readers to try the products (of their advertisers) that promise the readers to make the latter look like their models. And yet such products, more often than not, do not meet the expectations of their customers, eventually make them unhappy and continue to desire more of what then dont have.
He was reminded (with the issue) of his son whos fond of going to the mall. There was a proposal of banning roving kids/teenagers at the mall, after curfew hours. With the kids as majority patrons of malls, such a proposition was unfair, because according to the author, these kids are learning to differentiate their wants from the things that dislike by looking at the shops at the malls. Thus, they should not be deluded from visiting the malls. But the author sees no fancy at visiting malls. Thats why he often does not allow his son to go to the malls. For hi, there are lots of things that are more entertaining than going to the mall (such as playing with your family, going to parks, reading books etc.); are just few of past times that could enrich life. On the contrary, such are not enticing as visiting to the mall.
The Essay on A Worn Path Woman Life Makes
Chris MizelleRay 8 September 04 English 2"A Worn Path"A Worn Path" is, in my opinion, a very good story. It tells of an old black woman and the struggles she's had to deal with throughout her life. The author names the woman Phoenix after a mythological bird that died and then came back to life through its ashes which makes it immortal. The author makes the woman "immortal" because she continues ...
For according to the author, time has developed a culture with which it only focuses on the things that can only be provided with the use of money. Analysis As the saying goes, life is perplexing. If we caught ourselves bewildered with the complexities of life, we often end up like going crazy. The ironies of life often get to our nerves and I think that is absolutely normal. Coming up with wishful thinking could sometimes occurs to us just to find solutions to the everyday challenges of our lives. Just what the authors presented to the first paragraph of the essay.
He wished he had a power to give the wishes of everyone so that the habit of wanting will end. I would like to agree with that dream, because I do that sometimes. We deal with issues in our lives differently and I believe with the way the author faced the issue in the essay. He treated the issue as fair as possible because it involved his son as part of the society where it belongs and coming up with an idea that somehow he knows is right. The article is also about how each parent deal with the issue about generation gap. Time has indeed brought changes on the perspectives of each generation through the years.
If our parents find satisfaction in reading books, picnic, joining organizations for cause etc., the teenagers of today find it so boring engaging with those activities. Though I must admit a few of them really find satiated with the activities I mentioned. Going to the mall is one of the hobbies I have developed when once I lived in an urban area. I often find myself satisfied just by visiting each shop and I also learned my role and responsibilities as a customer. And I dont agree with what presented in the article that teenagers should be accommodated at the mall in a time wherein they should not stay long in the said establishment. For I believe its a safer place for them than to be on the streets and be involved in crimes.
The idea of not giving permission of the author to his son of not going to mall is just one of the concerns of the parents nowadays. Though they believe its a safe place for their children, going to the mall is sometimes a waste of time. If there is nothing important that you should go there, then why not spend your spare time things that could make you a better person. The lifestyles of teenagers nowadays are becoming luxurious. So why not encourage children to encourage priceless activities where they could be effective in facing life in the future. If only the teenagers of today will develop a sense of responsibility as early as possible then they will be able to find satisfaction on things that are not expensive yet valuable than going to the mall and get nothing but a desire of things that will never be of help to them..
