Manifest destiny was the desire to expand the U.S. from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Little by little manifest destiny was close to completion. Wars were fought; land was bought, until finally it was complete. After completion a couple of issues broke out. The issue of slavery along with Manifest Destiny together contributed to the Civil War and secession.
Slavery was a really big issue due to the fact that a lot of people were for and against it. Just like a disagreement each side argued their opinion on it. In this case it was the North against the South. The North wanted to end slavery while on the other hand the South felt that it was an important need to keep it as it is. According to document H, the Republicans were a sectional party centered in the North. They rose because they were motivated by the issue of slavery and abolition. The Election of 1860 made an enormous impact on the U.S.
During the Election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln along with John Breckinridge, Stephan Douglas, and John Bell ran for the presidency. Abraham Lincoln won this election. He was against slavery so as president he wanted to put a stop to it. According to document G, Chief Justice Roger B. Taney during the Dred Scott v. Sanford stated how he felt that African Americans were not intended to be included under the word citizen in the Constitution. So therefore they could not claim rights and privileges. So back to how President Lincoln felt about this issue. He began making laws that didn’t please the South one bit which slowly starts causing them little by little to secede. South Carolina was the first of the few states to secede. This secession eventually caused the Civil War to break lose.

The Civil War was a fight for the freedom of slavery against the North and the South. This was one of the biggest fights in the history of the U.S. This war last a couple of years until President Lincoln finally won. Who would’ve thought a big war like this would start over secession. According to yahoo answers the question of whether secession was legal or has never been formally settled. And whether supporters today of the Confederacy like it or not, the South‘s efforts at independence and war are defined by the slavery they so desperately wanted to protect.
At the end slaves received the rights they deserved although it took plenty of time. Document D show the title of a book that made a huge impact on this. Secession and war came first but at the end it ended up with a bright side. Manifest Destiny was completed but we will never forget how along with its expansion it brought many problems to the United States of America.
