The two areas which the corporate would be looking to for change and reform in the healthcare sector would be to cover the greater portion of the uninsured and the under-insured and to bring down the spending in the healthcare sector. One of the companies that are encouraging the involvement of the uninsured in the health insurance coverage is the international pharmaceutical giant Astra Zeneca. It is the leading pharmaceutical company in the world and in the US more than 12000 people work for the company.
The company teamed with Christiana healthcare (a leading non-profit healthcare provider in Delaware) to provide insurance coverage to the uninsured employees of the company in Delaware and also the people of Delaware. Not only was the company interested in improving providing health insurance to the employees, but also to more than 100, 000 general public from the state of Delaware with insurance at free or very low costs.
Astra-Zeneca as a company is trying to improve the health status of the general public in Delaware, by providing insurance, encouraging better control over health, promoting preventive care, and early diagnosis and treatment. Previously the uninsured were often neglected which caused significant health sufferings, development of serious complications and serious mortality from diseases. The helath insurance coverage for the uninsured is provided both to children and adults of the community. In the year 2007, Astra-Zeneca spends more than500000 dollars on meeting the insurance needs of the uninsured populations (Wilmington, April 2, 2008).

Astra Zeneca has launched another effort with Humana Innova to improve the quality of healthcare and reduce the spending. The main aim of the collaboration would be to improve the treatment compliance and adherence from those suffering from chronic illnesses. Every year more than 100 billion is spend on treating problems that arise from people not taking medications prescribed to them properly. More than 43 % of the adults and 54 % of the children demonstrate some form of neglect with relation consuming medications prescribed to them.
Often in patients suffering from chronic disorders, administration of medications may be one way of preventing the development of more serious problems. If these 43 % of the patients would be stricter with the consumption of medications given to them, then there are better chances that the condition would improve, complications would be prevented and the costs and need for hospitalization would be reduced. In the year 2002, more than 40 million people in the US met with fatal outcomes and by the year 2020, this figure would be doubled (Lubitz, March 2006).
Any new program being developed would need to take into consideration, the need to reduce spending and cover the uninsured segments. In the US more than 47 million are uninsured and often it is found that this segment of the population requires the most amount of health insurance. Studies have shown that about 73 % of the elderly population is uninsured. There is a trend since the last few years that the employee provides lesser amount of health insurance. In the year 2005, about 60 % of the population had employee-based insurance, which declined to 59.
7 % in 2006 ((Kaiser Network, 2007).
The larger the workforce, the more the number of uninsured, and hence, greater would be the overall costs of healthcare treatment. When a larger workforce would be insured, the cost of insurance per head would be decreased. The staff members should also be made to pay for a certain component of the health insurance. The organization needs to combine adequately with the insurance company or the managed care or other settings to ensure that effective business models are being set-up.

The manager would have to closely assess the risk of the uninsured staff members and accordingly get them into the insurance. To ensure that the spending on health be reduced, wellness management, adoption of health prevention, prevention of complication, lifestyle changes, stress management, etc, should be employed so that the costs of treatment are lowered and the need to treat complications and hospitalize the patient is reduced.
In case the employee does not have health insurance and suffers from a chronic disease, there is likelihood that spending on healthcare would be high. Hence, to lower the spending, health insurance would be needed. Bringing more people into the insurance circle would ensure that the costs of medical treatment be avoided.
