How does Mary Shelly engage the Victorian readers of Frankenstein and why is it still relevant today?
Mary Shelly engages the readers by pretending to be a male writer. Female authors were less thought of than male authors, so Mary Shelly didn’t put her name to the book for 13 years. I think that because she was trying to hide from the publicity or she could be worried about sexism.
Mary shelly had also introduced a new genre to the public and this was called “Gothic Horror”. This had attracted the audience a lot because it was something new for them, something they had never experienced. She had kept the audience well interested by showing “Good vs. Evil”. She had used different techniques such as “Moral Dilemma”; this was scenes like Cloning, Abortion and ethnical choices. Mary shelly had also engaged the readers by using Science; this was scenes such as Dr. Frankenstein creating a being using various body parts from other dead peoples body (bringing the dead back to life).
Mary shelly used this because she knew that scientists at that time were discussing the possibility of bringing the dead back to life, one particular scientist – Erasmus Darwin – suggested that this was possible. I think that Mary shelly was interested in bringing the dead back to life because her mother (Mary Wollstonecraft) died 10 days later after her birth and Mary shelly lost her own daughter within 2 weeks of birth. Mary Shelley was married to a Romantic poet and her parents were both radical thinkers, who challenged the boundaries set by society.

Romantic writers produced works revealing extremes of isolation and socialisation, creating ‘either a wild beast or a god’ and proving that although solitude can render knowledge, it can also be the cause of deep suffering. Mary shelly had also made the story inconsiderably gory and a noticeably action story. She had introduced things such as Blood, Violence, Murder and had scarcely introduced romantic scenes in which will attract the older male viewers. Mary shelly had also engaged the readers by showing letters out. This interests the readers by showing them the confidential information as they could contain secrets. Letters have been used in novels for a long time e.g. Charles dickens describes letters and used them.
