The novel The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck discusses the affects of war on the armies and conquered people. Despite their desperation, the town’s people were willing to help other. They fought together for the greater cause. If they had not helped each other and worked together, they would not have been able to stand up against the occupying army. They were successful in standing up to the army only because they were together in their fight.
Doctor Winter and Annie supported Mayor Orden and Madame when from the beginning of the war until he was taken as hostage, they provided important support of friends. The concern of the Mayor about Alexander Morden and his refusal to submit to the army united the town’s fight. Ongoing support and unity allowed them to succeed. Annie and Madame were with Orden when he was preparing to leave.
He knew that Madame would need the support of her friends and fellow villagers in her grieving. He instructed Annie to stay with Madame as long as she needed. The support of Annie was crucial to Madame. The kind words of Doctor Winter when Mayor Orden was to be taken hostage gave the Mayor insight on the importance of his duty.
As Lanser prepared to take Orden, Doctor Winter and Mayor Orden showed solidarity to the soldiers. They both explained to Lanser that although they were being taken hostage, it was futile because the people would succeed in the end. Mayor Orden said, ” The flies have defeated the fly paper.” This is symbolic because the flies represent the people. The flypaper represents the occupying army.

There is vengeance, resurrection, sacrifice, death, passion, and the value of life. Instead of saying the fly, Mayor Orden said the flies. This shows that it was only as a group that they triumphed against the army. The solidarity was shown to the soldiers when Alexander Morden was placed on trial for murder. First, the mayor refused to sentence Alexander. At the trial, he spoke on Mr. Morden’s behalf.
He comforted Alexander as he was being taken to the square for his execution. His actions gave support to Alexander. The actions showed unity between the town’s people. To further, show solidarity between the people, at Mr. Morden’s execution, another man shot at Lieutenant Prickle. The actions of the unknown man showed the army that they would not allow one of their own to be executed with out a fight.
The support of the unknown man is important because it shows the soldiers the lengths that they people are willing attain in order to regain their freedom. Unity and Solidarity are what allowed the people to triumph against the soldiers. Support from the mayor helped the soldiers see the solidarity of the people during Alexander’s trial and execution. Annie and Doctor Winter provided crucial support to Mayor Orden and his wife.
Without support and unity, they would not have succeeded. Although I do not agree with the actions of several of the characters, their unity and support of each other is to be admired. The novel The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck, is almost a parable, teaching the readers to stay together and support one another throughout life’s challenges.
