Maurits Cornelis Escher
Maurits cornelis Escher was born in the Dutch province of Friesland on the seventeenth day of June in 1898. He Lived with his parents, George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman Escher, and three older brothers. His father, George was Chief Engineer for a government bureau. They moved to Arnhem and then in 1917 moved to Oosterbeek, Holland. He started taking private lessons for architecture at the Higher Technology School in Delft. Pursuing a career in architecture, he moved to Haarlem to study at the School for Architecture and Decorative Arts. After about a week there, he met an artist, Jessurun de Mesquita, who saw his drawings. Mesquita and the school’s director advised him to continue with them. In March of 1923, Escher worked hard as he traveled around Italy. At the end of the month, a Swiss family took up residence at the pension where he was staying. He found himself attracted to the daughter, Jetta Umiker. He fell in love with her and they decided to marry and move to Italy. They were wed in Viareggio, Italy on June 12,1924. They visited Genoa, Annecy, and Brussels. At the end of 1924, he and his wife bought a house under construction in Rome. The house was finished in March 1925, but they didn’t move in until October.
Shortly after he moved into his new home, his brother was killed in an mountaineering accident. At the end of 1930 on into 1931, he becme ill, and there was a lull in his sale of prints. In a meeting with the Director of the Dutch Historical Institute in Rome, G.J. Hoogewerff, Hoogewerff suggested some new works. The works he suggested were published as a book. In 1936, Escher made his first print that was impossible to reality, called Still Life with Street. A sad day in Escher’s life came on June 14,1939, when his father, George Arnold Escher, died. In May of 1940, the Nazis invaded Belgium and Germany. At the end of that month, his Mother, Sarah Gleichman Escher, died. Because of the invasion, he missed the funeral. In 1949, Escher and two other artists held a major exhibition in Rotterdam. Not only di dthey show their prints, all the artistsgave talks and demonstrations about their techniques. On April 27, 1955 as he was working on a woodcut, a man named Mr. Ros approached him and explained that he was acting as a stead for the mayor. Finally after talking a while, he offered him Knighthood. Of course he graciously acceptedand he was dubbed a Knight. Early in 1960, his first book of prints was released, Grafiek en Tekeningen, with descriptions of 76 works by Escher himself. In 1964, Escher went to North America again to see his son deliver a series of lectures. But with very bad luck, he became ill almost immediatly upon arrival. He and his wife returned to Holland after having surgery in Toronto. During the month of March in 1972, M. C. Escher became very ill. His family came to see him in the Hospital, but on March 27, 1972 the life of Maurits, Cornelis Escher ended.
