Mega cities are large cities, with a population of at least 8 million people. The amount of Mega cities are rising, due to the fact that for the first time in human history more people live in Urban Areas then rural areas. By 2015 there will be 33 Mega cities and 27 of them are in the developing world. Some examples of Mega cities are : Mexico city, Mumbai (India), Bangkok, Cairo and manilla. There are many challenges from living in a mega city that is in a developing world.
Housing- Housing is a serious problem in mega city’s. Land is very scarce in mega cities and the materials needed to build houses are just to expensive for some people. An example of this is in Mumbai (India) where up to 20 people may have to live in the same small house. The houses are made up of thin sheets of iron and any other materials that can be bought cheap. Some houses have dangerous materials such as asbestos and are very dangerous for these people. In Dharavi a slum in Mumbai, Most families all live in one house and use each room for many things such as eating on their floor , sleeping on their floor etc.
Developers sometimes bull doze slums and rebuild over them. However they offer the people replacement houses by creating many small units for families who have lost their homes. Traffic Infrastructure- is another problem that people In mega cities have to face. In Mumbai, there are very small lane ways and little to no roads, the ones that do exist are extremely crowded and have very slow movement. Public transport is limited ad governments do not have the money to improve their system.

Many people in Mumbai steal electricity off each other by rewiring wires from house to house.
Sanitation- Some developing mega cities have poor sanitation and few working public toilet systems. As many as 500 people use the same toilet that may just be connected to a river and have an open sewer. Employment- Many people move to mega cities because they think it is easier to get work and earn money, however sometimes this may not be the case. Although there may be more job opportunities in mega cities, jobs can be very dangerous and can cause serious harm to people from poor working conditions.
In Mumbai, 80% of local people are employed in the informal sector but are getting very low wages. Many Transnational corporations are expanding their operations to mega cities in developing worlds. It is good for them because they get cheap materials and pay cheap wages to people. This creates jobs opportunities for local people to earn money for their families. Pollution- Pollution is a serious problem that effects more than just mega cities, it effects the whole world.
In the slums in Mumbai,There is no rubbish collection, Rubbish just builds up everywhere attracting many unwanted health issues and also things like rats that can carry diseases. Although pollution is extremely bad there are ways for it to improve. In Lagos (Nigeria) the government has introduced a day, once a month to clean up rubbish in the city. The local people are required to clean and it is illegal to drive. One of the busiest roads in the city will normally be filled with traffic but on this day not a car will be in sight.
