In the United States, due to an inability to meet federal corporate average fuel economy regulations, Mercedes-Benz was fined a record US$30.66 million in 2009. Certain Mercedes-Benz cars including the S550, C63 AMG, and SLK55 AMG sold in the United States also face an additional gas guzzler tax. In 2008, Mercedes had the worst CO2 average of all major European manufacturers, ranking 14th out of 14 manufacturers. Mercedes was also the worst manufacturer in 2007 and 2006 in terms of average CO2 levels, with 181 g and 188 g of CO2 emitted per km, respectively.in 2010 the new B-Class is greener than ever. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been significantly lowered and made further reductions with new blue EFFICIENCY models. Available on manual B 160 and B 180 models, Blue EFFICIENCY versions offer an 11% cut in fuel consumption and a CO2 reduction of 11 g/km. This is thanks to an array of energy saving measures, including an ECO start / stop function for saving fuel in traffic. Production methods for the B-Class have also improved. Each brand has their own specialty advantage that makes their product look unique, so Mercedes -Benz company have to make sure that they are strong enough to enter the market by keep innovate their cars, come out with a new exclusive models and keep the low price and maintain the quality of product, and promote the car in other different way. During the time of the merger with Chrysler, Mercedes took a hit on market share and quality perception. Still, the strength of the brand itself helped to capitalize gains back in the years 2006 and 2007.
