In this essay, I will talk about the methods used to make the opening battle sequence of “Saving Private Ryan” both shocking and realistic and how effective it is as an introduction to the film. The film is about the D-Day of the Second World War.The battle sequence shows how shocking the war was. The film maker use very different ways to show how the war is terrifying,and for this uses many techniques which add to effects the make the most of the opening battle scene more realistic and shocking. The three main methos that were used in this film was special effects, camera angles and graphic actions. In this essay, I will split the opening battle scene into four different parts. The transition from present to past, the instant of chaos, captain Miller’s confusion and the end of the battle.
The first part of the film was “The transition from present to past”. The scene started with an old man with his family walked towards a grave yard where the soldiers were burried. This makes the viewers think that the old man must be a shldier who had faught the battle with the people who were burried in the grave yard or he will be the family or a friend of them.Otherwise he would not come and visit them.He cried after the arrived at one of the gravestone.This made the audience more curious about what is happening at this moment. They would want to know more about this old soldier,why did he cry and who was burried under that gravestone.The traditional American music start to come in as background music. The camera was closr up of the old man’s eyes, we can clearly see the focus of his eyes. As the old man had a flash back to the 6th June 1944 when the battle started. The camera shows a close up view of the soldiers. The sound that we can hear change from the traditional American music to the sound of the waves,boat enginem, comands from the captain and loud bangs and machine guns firing.

The second section of the opening scene was “the instant chaos”. As the camera turns away from the iron hedgehog and sets to a close up of Captain Miller’s shaking hands. The camera zooms out from the kettle. The kettle was shaking which shows how nervous Captain Miller is. Also as the camera zooms away from the single image of captain image of Captain Miller,which shows how important he is and aslo shows that he is the leader of the soldiers. The camera also shows all the other solders individually. With the sound effects raising, such as the clanging of the bottle and the man being sick at the front of the boat, it makes the audience feels tension rising
What’s more effective about the scen where the soldiers are still on the engine boat is that as soon as the boat door opens, chaos has suddenly enters the film. Sudden chaos takes over as German soldiers fire their guns at the only recently arrived Americans. At this part, Spielburg has the cameras being set over the German soldiers’ shoulder. This is also effective as it gives a view of their actions. As the sldiers are suddenly taken down one by one with the diegetic sound of the rushing bullets, the handheld cameras are immediately brought out. They follow a few of the surcicing soldiers into the sea. As the camera drifts above the water, the chaos is back, but as it goes underneath the water, in a way there is even more chaos than there is above the water. This is because the sound is muted as to be a soldier’s prespective, and I seperates the audience from what’s happening above the water.

The third scene was the “ Captain Miller’s confusion”. In this scene, Speilberg shows the idea of being shell-shcoked. As a shell loudly crashes into the beach near where Captain Miller is walking. This is greatly shown by the camera shaking to add more chaos and shows that there is more destruction in this scene.As Captain Miller is shocked, the cameras zoom into a close up of him in jerky slow motion. It creates the idea of helplessness and that he can just knee there looking around at other soldiers. Which shows that the soldiers felt helpless.

The sounds become muted while he is shell-shocked. You can only hear the destruction of the shells and shuts fro men screaming from all the pain they’re experiencing. The colore becomes darker but clearer as the helpless soldiers looking around for their missing arm or laying on the sand holding their wounds in great pain.
What is also effective is the way the cameras are set out, such as an over shouder camera. This shows the beach scene from his angle showing what other solders are doing as he looks around. It allows the audience to view things from his perspective and to see all the wreckage. It also gives the audience an idea about what the shell shock is like. The atmosphere that is being shown during Captain Miller’s confusion is the horrow of war. It shows all the damage and all the pain the soldiers are expericing.
In the last scene on the beach, there is yet another image of Captain Miller’s hands shaking. This adds alo more tension because this shows that he was very nervous. There is a bog close up view of Miller’s eyes. This is to replicate the close up of Ryan’s eyes at the beginning. This shows that there is a connection between them.
After all of the fighting has come to its end, there is a long shot of the beach at the end. This shows the bloody seawater washing over all of the bodies laying on the beach. The scene actually ends after Miller said “ Quite a view” about the surroundingss. It ends with a long shot of the beach, slowlu zooming into an iage of Ryan’s backpack cramped in with everything else on the beach. The waves begin to sound calmer as the fighting has ended, and onlu distant gunshots can be heard from a different place. The sounds of waves begin to become faded out as the gentle American music takes over. The music was siilar as the music at the beginning. This gives relief as the battle here has ended.
