In 2003 he missed 12 games due to a serious neck injury. Even after undergoing surgery, and the rest of his career being questionable, there was no doubt in his mind that he would be back on the field. Now, I don’t know about you but after a life-threatening injury, the last thing I would want to do would be to throw myself back on the field to do it all over again. This quote sums up the Mike Alstott philosophy: “I have never backed down from any carry, any time,” said Alstott. “I would carry it 50 times a game and I’ve always said that.” Pure and simple, Mike loves football and he loves his community. Nothing could get in the way of him fulfilling his duty and doing what he loves.
I know these pictures are small, but you can’t help but see his smile from across the room. His attitude is contagious. You can’t help but admire his outlook on life when this is what he is up against. This picture is what you normally think of when you think of an NFL player: a big guy that lets you know that he is all muscle and no heart, ready to bash your head into the ground if you even think of coming his way. Well, Mike just loves the game. He is grateful to have the opportunity to do what he loves, and this attitude shows throughout his everyday life.
Mike Alstott not only breaks through the defensive line, but breaks the barriers of the normal role an athlete has to his community. Sure, Mike Alstott is a great football player. He’s a huge asset to his team. He moves the ball like no one else can. But know what- I don’t know that much about football. What I do know is that Mike would be happier any day to know that he has touched someone else’s life rather than score the winning touchdown.
Throughout his nine year career, Mike has given back to the Tampa Bay community in every possible opportunity. He doesn’t take his fame for granted and strives to give every child the same opportunity that was given to him. Each year around Christmas time, Mike makes a visit to the Joshua house which provides shelter to abused, abandoned, and neglected children. He takes the time to pose for individual photographs with all of the children and give them signed footballs and posters.
The Essay on Parents As Teachers Children Teach Love
Throughout my life, I have been lucky enough to have a very good relationship with my parents. Parents can be very important teachers in our lives; however, they are not always the best teachers. Parents may be too close to their children emotionally. Sometimes they can only see their ...
Its not just a quick visit- he wants each of the children to know how special they are and that he really cares. “Anything I can do to support and help out, I’m here for them,” said Alstott. In 1997, through involvement with the Boys and Girls Club he started the Mike Alstott Football Camp which was established to provide young athletes, between the ages of 8-18, the opportunity to develop their football skills in a well-supervised, organized and enthusiastic environment. He frequently supports All Children’s Hospital, whether stopping by to sign autographs or through his sporting tournaments in which proceeds benefit the All Children’s Cancer Center. He also created a program named Alstott’s Army which gives tickets to underprivileged children to go to the Bucs’ games. Or maybe you ” ve eaten at his restaurant, Island Way Grill.
Mike Alstott makes things happen in a big way. Its hard to see where he finds the time to constantly give back, but its what he feels is the right thing to do. As you can see, Mike Alstott is more than just a football player. You can argue that there are better football players, and you could say that other players help their community too, but there is no denying that Mike Alstott is an extremely devoted person to his team and neighbors. He never gives up and never stops giving back. So next time you see him pounding into the guys defending him remember that he’s doing it with love.
He’s got his eye on the goal line and the sky is truly his limit.
