I joined the Army July 27th 2009, and at the time I was still under the age of eighteen. I had to have my parents consent, and they were in full support of my choice to enlist. This didn’t come to a big surprise to my parents, because my older brother was already enlisted, serving time in Iraq. He had a big influence in my decision because I watched him become a better person and wanted to follow in his footsteps. As soon as I had seen how much, for the better, my brother had changed and grown into a much more mature young man, I knew this is what I not only needed, but what wanted to do.
When I first realized my whole life was going to change dramatically was when I went through basic training. The day of Graduation as I looked out and saw my parents for the first time in six months was one of the greatest and happiest moments of my life. Right then and there I knew I had accomplished what only one percent of America has achieved. During my time served, I never thought in my life I would have traveled to the bases, and states the military brought me to. Being in all different parts of the world, especially Baghdad Iraq, had a huge impact on not only my life, but on how not to take life for granted. Seeing the way they lived over seas, in a war zone, has made me absolutely grateful for the friends, family, fiancé, and life I have and live freely here in the United States.
Friends and memories came quickly during my time served as an active duty member of the armed forces. Today I still keep in touch with many of the friends I met over the three years I was in. Our deployment together brought us closer than ever, and I consider each one of them a brother to me. Anytime a problem occurs in my life, if my fiancé is not around I know I can lean on any one of them for their full support. Whenever I call I know that I will get an answer every single time, and this has an amazing impact in my life by having more then enough support. It is not only the friends that impact my life, but the completion of my service has now set me up for nothing but success in my future. Using the GI bill I am not only taking college that is fully paid for, but also receive a allowance that helps out with the rent I must pay, and the food I buy.

The life I live happily today is owed greatly to the choice I made in joining the military. It has impacted my life significantly, and in every single way it has bettered me as a man. As I continue my education, using the GI bill I believe to have earned for myself, I will always look back at the day I enlisted and know I made the greatest choice of my life as of today. I look forward to what the future will now bring me, and the successes I will continue to make because of the impact joining the military has made in my life.
