This book was about a group of friends that play golf and gamble all day at the worst golf course in America (they call it Ponky).
One day one of them proposes a bet to see who could be the first one to play in the Mayflower, the golf course next door. This wasn?t easy because the Mayflower is one of the best courses in America. So Two Down, Dannie and Raymond each put in $1,000 to see who could play the course first. What everybody doesn?t know is that Raymond?s father belongs to the club. But Raymond hasn?t spoken with him for years after he tortured his other son, who eventually committed suicide. Raymond wasn?t going to call his father until it became absolutely necessary. All three had many good ideas, but they all failed. Finally, all three of them landed tee times on the final day of the bet, but not before they raised the stakes another $1,000 each. Raymond was forced to call and play with his father, but he did win the bet. Things weren?t the same between the friends after the bet and Raymond didn?t like it either. Then Two Down got into some gambling trouble. Two Down made a crazy bet with a man who he was down to, to play 18 holes, nine at the Mayflower and nine at Ponky. Both men had one partner, Two Down chose Ray and the man he was down to (Concorde) chose Ray?s father. Two Down had to give up his house if he lost and Ray would bet his Jack Nicklaus driver that Jack himself used to defeat Arnold Palmer at the 1962 US Open, which had a face value of about $35,000.
The Term Paper on Tennessee Williams Life Plays Father
Everything in his life is in his plays, and everything in his plays is in his life, Elia Kazan said of Tennessee Williams. Williams, who is considered to be the greatest Southern playwright, inserted many of his own personal experiences into his writing, because he found no other means of expressing things that seemed to demand expression (Magill 1087). He stated that his primary sources of ...
I enjoyed this book very much. This is the best book that I have read in a long time. I think that one of the reasons I liked it was because it was so funny. The first thing I found funny was the terminology they used while they played at Ponky. For example, when someone had a bad round they referred to it as ?putting up a radio station,? to emphasize the high score. Another thing that was funny is that on a normal day, all they did was gamble, play golf, gamble, drink and gamble some more. I also liked that the people in the book were fearless. They were not afraid to use a fake name or sneak into the club and play around at night. The most fearless thing that was in the book was when Dannie waited for a member to die and then go into the club and pretend that she did not know about his death. She proceeded to tell the club official that the recently deceased member was supposed to make a tee time for her to play that morning. The club official then told Dannie because this was such terrible news and she was so depressed that she and the rest of her group should go ahead and play a free round. Although the idea ended up not working, it was an idea that took a lot of balls to attempt to pull off.
Another thing I liked about the book was the cleverness of the author. When the three were trying to win the bet they all came up with some pretty clever ideas, all of which could of easily worked. And when they were playing the nine holes at each course, the author came up with some pretty smart and funny ideas for things that happened. Another thing I really liked about this book was the fact that it wasn?t like most books. When I say this I mean that because if this was any other regular old book, the first bet would have lasted the whole book and it wouldn?t have been as interesting. when the bet got started, the first ideas that they came up with, even though they were clever, we all new they would not wok because then there would be nothing to write about for the rest of the story. But instead of being like other books, it surprised me by ending the story much earlier and continuing with a whole new saga that I did not expect to happen. I also enjoyed the fact that one character came up with a clever idea he was soon to be matched by another character Even though I did like this book very much, there were a few parts that could have been better in my opinion. For starters, I didn?t like the way the author jumped around from chapter to chapter.
Essay Book Things Fall Apart
In the story we see many themes regarding the role of women, the Ibo belief system and values. Here women are seen not as partners to share what one has but as property and extra hands to farm. The more wife’s a man has the higher his status and respect; they have no say and should do as they are told. They work the farm with the kids and maintain the house. They have a complex belief system; they ...
At the end of a chapter he could be talking about something to do with golf and at the beginning of the next chapter it was like the book had nothing to do with golf and all it talked about was his brother or father. He kind of left you hanging in some parts by not continuing with the same thought into the next chapter. At least he could of ended the golf thought or story, start the next chapter and then talk about his family problems. I didn?t like the way that he left the story hanging and started a completely new thought. I also think that in the first part of the book he didn?t take enough time to explain each character. I seemed to get confused with all those people who hung around Ponky and who they were and what they were doing. I liked all the characters, but I did get confused to who was doing what sometimes. Raymond Lee Hart is an immoral person because he fails to display the virtues of honesty, wise judgment, and respect for creation. All throughout the book, Ray chooses to do the wrong thing. It didn?t matter if he were lying, cheating or making and ass out of another person, he chose wrong and he failed miserably to display these First, Raymond fails to display the virtue of honesty.
There are a few times in the novel where Ray is not honest. At other times in the book he doesn?t lie, but is not completely honest either. For example, when they make the first bet, Ray fails to mention the fact that his father is a member at the Mayflower. ?My first reaction was sinister, nobody else knew my father was over there.? (40) Even though Ray does not directly lie, he is certainly not being honest. In another part of the story Ray lied to a security guard saying that he had taken pictures of him sleeping a few nights ago. ?He really took some beauties of you,? I said. (149) First Ray snuck onto the course at night and barely avoided trouble. Then when he was about to get caught for the second time, he lied and got his way out of it. He should of admitted it and took the heat, not lied like a weasel. Also in the story when Ray was trying to get into the Mayflower and to look around to possibly get an idea to be able to play on the course, he lied about the places he had previously been a caddie. ?Out West, six seasons in Cherry Hills in Denver.? (85) Ray took a perfectly good job away from another person that might have really needed it. He lied about his qualifications for the job and even made up a fake name that he took the job under.
The Essay on Odyssey Telemachos Analysis Father Suitors Book
To thine own self be true, is a famous Shakespearean quote, and one the character Telemachos in The Odyssey had to struggle to learn to appreciate. He is first introduced to the reader as being meek and passive, feeling as if defending his family against the suitors is a hopeless effort. With the interference of Athena, he begins to have faith in both himself and his father, returning after years ...
Secondly, Ray is an immoral person because he fails to display the value of wise judgment. In this book, Ray made a lot of bets, a whole lot of bets. He won the majority, but when the odds are against you, and you still make the bet, it is considered to be bad judgment, even if you do win. Even though is father was a member of the club, he did not want to call him and ask to play. With the insight that the two others had in winning this bet, it was Ray?s bad judgment to take the bet and possibly lose $1,000. ?Bank, I said.? (40) This quote is another way of saying ?I?m in,? meaning that Ray was in the bet for everyone?s $1,000. Another bad bet that Ray decided to take was the one he made with Two Down against Concorde and his father. His father and Concorde clearly had the advantage and Ray went ahead and made the bet anyways. One reason he made the bet was to try to help Two Down, but if he used better judgment, he could have worked out a better deal. When he was trying to provoke his father into the bet, he said, ?The numbers crunch just right, don?t you think?? (214) Ray is challenging his father to the match by asking him if he wants to win all that money because his father is very greedy.
When he agreed to the bet he was in deep enough, but then he, in a sense, raised the stakes. What is he, crazy? Ray also failed to use wise judgment when he snuck onto the Mayflower Golf Course at night. What was he thinking? With the guards that they have there, he had a better chance of getting caught than getting away. When he suggested the idea to Hoover, he responded, ?You want to play at the Mayflower Club, maybe the finest and most exclusive course in that country, at night?? (68) Finally, Ray is an immoral person because he fails to display the virtue of respect for persons. When Ray makes a bet, he will do whatever it takes to win. No matter who gets hurt of disrespected. Also when Ray is helping a friend, he will hurt anyone except the friend he is helping. This is good for the friend that he helps but bad for anyone else who gets in his way. Ray shows us this when Two Down is in a little bit of gambling trouble. He tries to catch Concorde cheating on his wife so he can bribe him not to make Two Down pay. Then he tries to recover actual pictures of him cheating. When Ray is aiding Two Down in retrieving these pictures, Two Down says to Thug, ?Any framables of the happy couple.? (186) Two Down was telling Thug to find any pictures of Concorde and another woman, not his wife.
The Essay on Chicago Cub Ray Field Father
Ray Kinsella helped other people fulfill their dreams by traveling for miles to find them, and bring them back to his field of dreams. In the book Shoeless Joe, W. P. Kinsella wrote about how some people were missing something in their lives, but they found what they had been looking for when they arrived at Ray's field. Ray built a baseball field to fulfill his unfulfilled dreams of the past. ...
Thug was the one hiding in the closet taking the pictures because Ray had helped Two Down plan to catch Concorde in the act. Another time that Ray showed no respect for persons, is on most Friday nights, when him and Dannie got together and ?did their thing.? This shows no respect for Dannie because he said that they never talked or went out, she was used for pleasure purposes only. They would say things to each other such as, ?Well you ain?t bad, for practice.? (9) Ray never showed a shed respect for his father throughout the entire book. Maybe it was true that his father was responsible or his brothers death, but Ray needs to learn to forgive and forget. I know it is not easy to forget the death of your brother, but it doesn?t mean that he can?t talk to his father, or play golf once in a while. One of the last things that Ray said to his father before Travis died was, ?Its a long slow deal, I said, it might take a long time.? (102) Ray is implying that it is going to be a long time before he can forgive his father for the death of Travis. In conclusion, Raymond Lee Hart is an immoral person because he fails to display the virtues of honesty, wise judgment, and respect for persons.
As stated earlier, Ray does a lot of moral things in this book. He helps his friend stay in town and keeps him from moving away and starting his life again. Even though he does a good amount of moral things in this book, they are certainly outweighed by the number of immoral things that he does. I don?t think Ray should be a role model for me. His excessive gambling and sex sets a bad example for all young children and even some young adults. His behavior does not deserve to be looked up to in the least. Some might argue that the compassion that he shows and the loyalty to his friends should be considered good and he should therefore become a role mode, but I disagree. I advise people not to look up to or use Ray as a role model at all. I hope that no one ever reads this book and says that they want to be like Ray.
