The purpose of a mission statement is to represent the overall goal of the organization, to guide the pathways to which they will practice, and provide an overall framework for continued practice. While most mission statements will differ, the overall goal is for continued success and best outcomes for that organization.
Nursing Philosophies of an organization states thoughts on what is believed to be truthful about the specific profession and usually a theorist who best represents the goal and mission that the organization desires to achieve and maintain while practicing optimal patient outcomes.
Throughout my career, I have worked for a number of different hospitals and long term care facilities. Currently, I am employed per-diem at a local teaching hospital in New York who serves a large population in the South Bronx. They have yet to obtain Magnet Status however, the goal to obtain magnetism is being attempted. According to Bronx Lebanon Hospital ‘s philosophy, their nurses “reach their goals through professional collaboration and framework with peers and in partnership with patients and the community”.
The nursing philosophy of the organization is evident in daily practice. “Nurses are involved in the art of nursing and are totally committed to producing the best care possible with the highest quality outcomes while showing and maintaining compassionate, evidenced based care, communication, and collaborative care which are all important”. Patient centered care by management and staff is always at the core. Best practices are followed to maintain high levels of patient satisfaction. Success is seen as most patients are frequent flyers and are known well to the physician’s who care for them as they continually return to have their health needs addressed.

The mission statement of Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center is to “deliver the highest quality service to the Bronx community through building a healthcare network that is continuously striving foe excellence by truly opening it’s arms to heal, to teach, and to care”. The organization maintains that it’s chief role is to maintain quality care in the community and will continue to respond positively to the changes of the health care system and produce best patient outcomes. Additionally, the organization continues to build and strengthen relationships and it reinforces the hospital’s role in the community as doctor to the community as it strives to hold a position as the healthcare leader and maintain positive change.
Adelphi University, which is located in Long Island, has many attendees who have graduated with Baccalaureate Degrees and are currently employed at Bronx Lebanon. The mission statement of Adelphi University is “to advance the art and science of nursing, and to promote scholarship in nursing. Through nursing research, education, and practice, students and faculty seek to enhance the quality of life for all people”. Nurses will make contributions to the health care system.
The nursing philosophy of the university is based on the ideology that the goal is to “ address human needs across the lifespan, to promote, protect, maintain, and restore health and human dignity. Nurses act as compassionate providers of care, managers, leaders, educators, researchers, consultants, advocates, and collaborators”. In comparison of both organizations, it is evident that both desires best outcomes.

Both emphasize that nurses practice with compassion and show humanistic behaviors for achievement of best care outcomes and through educational programs, as their careers progress. Philosophically, both organizations addresses nursing as an art and utilizes evidenced based practices to facilitate nurses to continue to make contributions to the health care system that will continue to adapt to a changing health care environment and produce positive outcomes. There was no specific theorist associated with either organization.
In contrast, both organizations differ in that Bronx Lebanon as a practicing organization maintained more patient specific and centered goals of patient satisfaction and a more collaborative approach with doctors and patients in the community. Their philosophical statements also differ in that Bronx Lebanon focuses more on the practicing clinician.
Mission and philosophical statements of an organization must represent exactly what the organization stands for and what the goal, which are intended to be obtained. While each mission and philosophical statements may differ, the overall goal of the statement is to represent the organizational goal.
