Where is the plantation located? What is its area? Describe. The plantation is located in Diamond Farm 22, Alejal Carmen, Davao del Norte. The area of banana plantation is very wide because bananas are used for exporting in different countries. In every 1 hectare there are approximately 2,000 populations of different varieties of banana. The distance of banana to each other is 2.2 meters.
What plant species is grown? What for (food or industry)? Explain. The plant species grown in Diamond Farm 22 are bananas. They used different varieties of banana namely; a.) Grandnaine has larger trunk, shorter bunch of banana and fruits, b.) Ecuador has large trunk, longer bunch and longer fruits, c.) Williams has average size of trunk, longer bunch and longer fruits. The plantation is for supplying and producing banana for expoet and domestic purposes. The plantation supply banana on different parts of the world like Japan, Switzerland and Australia.
Describe the plant’s growth and stage. What chemicals are used in the plantation?
The growth and stages of the banana start from the plantlet. The original fruit bearing plant is called the “mother”. After harvesting, it is cut down and a plant called a daughter or ratoon (follower) grows from the same roots as the mother. This follower or suckers are used to replace or to be transplanted to the other area of the plantation in order to replace the mother plant. The suckers that are used for propagation usually have stem diameter of 2 to 6 inches and are about 3 months old. The leaves are commonly cut off. The second stage is the vegetative growth. In this stage false stem or pseudostem is developed, that shoots off from the underground corm and is formed by concentric layers of leaf sheaths. The third stage is the flowering. The flowers appear in groups (hands) along the stem and are covered by purplish bracts which roll back and shed as the fruit stem develops.
The Term Paper on The Threat of the Expansion of the Banana Plantation
According to studies of the Davao City Water District, 98 percent of the city’s drinking water is sourced from groundwater mainly from Talomo-Lipadas. This 38,000-hectare watershed has an annual volume of water catch of 760 million cubic meters (MCM) or 2 MCM per day. It is one of the nine watersheds in the city that direly needs protection. In Davao City the main source of water supply is ground ...
The first hands to appear contain female flowers which will develop into bananas (usually seedless in edible types).
The number of hands of female flowers varies from a few to more than 10, after which numerous hands of sterile flowers appear and shed in succession, followed by numerous hands of male flowers which also shed. The last stage is the maturity of the banana plant. In this stage the banana are ready for harvest. Bananas usually are harvested after they reached a certain size but are still green. They are allowed to ripen while transported or being sold. Because if they weren’t picked green they would spoil by the time they reached the market. Bananas that are left ripen on the tree are “full of water and taste bad”. After harvest, the stalk is cut off at the base and chopped into small pieces which are left on the ground and incorporated in as mulch.
In order to ensure the growth of banana and making it free from pest and destructive factors, farmers tend to introduce chemicals like; a.Ammonium Sulfate – to help smaller bananas to grow.
b.Urea – used as fertilizers that enable mature bananas bear some fruits. c.Potash – introduced to plants that started to produce fruits. d.Areal spray – used to free the banana leaves from pest and to avoid diseases that would affect the processes of the banana. e.Formalin – act as disinfectant that would kill pest and microorganisms. f.Bolt – chemicals that are used to inject in the bud of the banana to have a good quality. g. Fungicide – to avoid and eliminate fungi on the banana and fungicide applied before covering the banana bunch with polyethylene bag. This is also used to prevent mealybug, petmark, etc. h.Pesticide – to free the banana from mealybug, scale insect, diamond black moth, fruit flies, etc. i.Herbicide – to kill the weeds around the banana tree that would compete with banana for nutrients. j.Lorsban – introduced to the banana to inhibit insect from attacking the banana.
The Essay on Accidents, Incidents and Fatalities in a Chemical/Refinery Plant
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have found recurring causes of accidents in the chemical industry and petroleum refineries, which include lack of process hazards analysis (PHA), poor analysis of process condition, use of improper or badly-designed chemical equipment, and training and operator error (Belke, 2007). ...
11.Has the plantation caused changes in landform? What was it before? Describe.
The plantation really affects the landform because originally, there are no banana trees planted in the area. Previous plants that are located in the area are melons, coconut trees and the land is originally plain. But in the present, the form of the land becomes uneven. The first thing that was done in the land is that it was disturbed by using tractors and other machineries to prepare the land for the planting season. After that, farmers established drainage that would act as the passageway of the water. Primary drainage was done to serve as the main canal then secondary drainage was created wherein water from the tertiary drainage will take its course in this channel. Lastly, small channels (bukitis) was done so that the water will not stuck when bananas are finished planting. These agricultural construction and renovation resulted on the changes of landform in Diamond Farm 22.
12.Is the community benefited by the presence of the plantation? What problems, if any, are caused by the plantation? Explain.
The community indeed benefited on the plantation since the establishment provide jobs for the people and like what we observed, almost all the dwellers of the area work on the plantation. The use of chemical sprays may have a serious impact on the health of workers and people living in the area, as well as the surrounding wildlife.
13.React or comment on the presence of the plantation in your community.
The presence of the plantation in the community is indeed like a blessing that helped the people in the community to uplift their economical status. The banana plantation provides opportunities and jobs for the people in order to change or enhance their way of living but there are certain aspects making it unfavourable.
The creation of drainage and introducing agricultural machineries greatly affect the land from its original form which is plain and suitable for supporting various lives tend to transformed to irregular forms of land and decrease richness of the soil. Another problem is their utilization of the chemicals they used. These chemicals may contribute on the growth of the banana and avoidance from pest, fungus etc. But these chemicals may also cause diseases on the humans and animals if not properly introduced to plants and dispose to disposal areas. These chemicals may also affect the soils richness.
The Essay on Chemical and Phisical Changes
Title: Chemical and Physical Changes. Purpose: To determine the differences between chemical and physical changes when they happen. Materials: Five test tubes, Bunsen burner, crucible, test tube holder, triple beam balance, ring stand, triangle, evaporation dish, wood splint, copper turnings, copper (II) nitrate, dilute nitric acid, Ba(NO3)2, Na2CrO4, FeCl3, KSCN, AgNO3, ammonium dichromate, ...
The plantation must also minimize some distortion and agricultural construction on the land so that we would not greatly change its forms and eventually richness. The introduction of chemicals on the land must be done in caution so that it would not cause diseases on people, cause population and cause changes on the land. These chemicals must be stored and dispose properly. And lastly, the community must always take active role in taking good care of the land so that they could still earn money while helping and taking care of the land.
