The everyday monomyth hero follows a classic path. Starting from birth, to leaving home, to a final battle and ending with the journey home and the final reward. Every hero follows this pattern in some way, shape or form. This even includes Arthur Dent, from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Arthur is someone we consider to be and everyday monomyth hero because, with a few exceptions, he follows the Monomyth cycle to a tee. When we first are introduced to Arthur everything seems normal until he discovers his house is being demolished to build a bypass.
Now this may not be some fabulous circumstance that establishes a hero, but it does connect to the story and how he later becomes a hero. As we continue down the story Arthur is met by another character known as Ford Prefect. Ford tells Arthur of the world ending, which becomes his call to adventure. When the end does come Arthur and Ford are beamed up into a spaceship, which is currently destroying the Earth. By the time Earth is gone Arthur realizes “‘I’m a bit upset about that. ’… ’Understand that! ’ shouted Arthur.
‘Understand that! ’… ’I’m not panicking! ’… ’Alright so i’m panicking, what else is there to do? ’” Arthur has officially crossed the threshold into a new unknown world and his adventure has yet to begin. Lastly if you’re still wondering about that bypass, Earth was destroyed to build and intergalactic one. Throughout his entire journey Arthur meets many new people who become his helpers through all of their adventures. These people include Ford Prefect, Trillian, Marvin, and Zaphod Beeblebrox.

All of these people continue to be vital to Arthur’s life whenever he faces test’s. When Arthur first begins his journey he faced with escaping death by Vogon, the creatures that destroyed Earth. When it seems like all hope is lost and Arthur and Ford are just about to die, they are picked up by another ship that happens to belong to Zaphod and Trillian. As the four of them travel across the galaxy they finally make it to Zaphod’s prime destination, a city by the name of Magrathea. Magrathea, in its day was a planet built for building other planets.
It was a rich and powerful planet until the system broke and the empire collapsed, since then it had long been abandoned, or so they thought. When trying to land their ship onto Magratha, the group is faced with yet another challenge. Down on Magratha some things were still working, including a program to blow up any ships trying to land. How Arthur and his friends survived is simply improbable. By using the ships Improbability Drive, the missiles somehow switched directions and headed straight for an innocent space whale.
After wandering around Magrathea and getting lost and finding each other again Arthur faces his final challenge. Since Arthur is the last human on Earth he is the only surviving piece to the supercomputer known as Earth. This supercomputer was supposed to come up with the question for the answer of life the universe and everything and Arthurs brain holds the key, the mice need this key. In his final battle he must escape the mice in order to keep his brain and find a way to make it back to the ship without being killed by the intergalactic police men that have come for a completely unrelated reason.
The group, however, does escape unharmed and start their flight, not to home but to yet another adventure. Arthur’s adventures never truly stop, so we don’t know yet how his journey will end. If the monomyth cycle has taught me anything i would say that Arthur does end up making his way home and is presented with an elixir or reward to congratulate his heroic actions. Even though Arthur Dent doesn’t really exist the everyday monomyth hero does, and you never know, it could be inside of you, maybe you just haven’t had your call yet.
