Summary of Pages: 71 ” 80 – (Fahrenheit 451) – Montag and Mildred spend the afternoon reading. The mechanical hound comes to their house and sniffs at the door. Mildred expresses her discontent when Montag talks about Clarissa because she is dead; furthermore she goes on to say she prefers the pretty colours, people and family of the T. V parlor to books.
Montag does not understand what he is reads and decides he needs guidance. Subsequently he remembers meeting a retired English professor a year back in a park. During this incident Faber and Montag talked, not only did Faber tell Montag a poem but left his address with Montag acknowledging he was a fireman, after being reassured he was safe. Montag calls the professor, asks him how many copies of the Bible, Shakespeare, or Plato are left in the country.
Faber replies by saying none are left, and as a result of his fear hangs up the phone thinking Montag is trying to trap him. Montag realizes the book he possesses could be the last copy of the Bible, therefore considers submitting a substitute but realizes if Beatty knew which book he took, consequently Beatty would think he possessed a whole library. Subsequently, Montag decides to create a duplicate and before he leaves to Faberfs he yet again tries to correlate with Mildred only to be dismissed by her un intrest. Montag takes the Subway to Faberfs apartment.
On the way he tries to memorize the Bible, he compares this task to filling a sieve with sand, and becomes even more frustrated by the jungle of an advertisement which results in him screaming into the radio, waving his book around and having guards called to him by other passengers. Montag leaves the subway at the next stop not only evading the guard but to visit Faber and show him the book which diminishes Faberfs fear of him.
