The light was worshiped by all nations; the Sun, the Moon, the stars, fire and the lightning were personified in mythological images of Mitra, Aton, Brachman, Ishtar, Venus, Prometheus, Zeus and many others. Since it came into existence, the nations tried to find explanation to the mystery of light. The celestial bodies, as well as other earthy bodies and substances that reflected its shining were the subject of adoration. People said their prayers to the Gods, who were associated with the light. From the other, the vast majority of the artists consider the landscape to be of minor importance. Some of them consider that the landscape requires less skills and talent compared to portrait. The Moonlit Landscape gives the viewer the feeling of the beauty and the feeling of the unity of the man and nature. Aert Van der Neer is a Dutch artist (Amsterdam, 1603-1677) (Aert van der Neer 2007).
Although he was not very popular in his own time, he had great impact on European landscape painting. The Moonlit Landscape is evidently one of the best Aert Van der Neers paintings. Although the artist managed to retain monochrome color (with an intensified contrast of treatment of light and shade), the very intensification of grey-blue and yellow-brown tones allows creating the cheerful and mysterious image of Dutch moonlit nature.

As we read from left to right, and from the bottom upwards, the very composition of the landscape allows us making a stop in order to come back. All details of the painting underline its main content. The basic lines force the viewer to make a slow round, where the visual row gradually brings to the main focus of the landscape. The artist avoided straight lines and, owing to this technique, the entire composition became more rhythmical.
