When I was in the fourth grade, everything came down on me like a ton of anvils. Everything was going wrong. It was either struggling to understand something that I was trying to learn or the teacher yelling at me constantly and embarrassing me in front of the class. Not only did all of this occur, my para at the time was telling a lot of lies to get me deeper into trouble that I had already been implanted there by my teacher. Things were not looking too good.
When that horrible class, after months of months of seeming endless torture ended, I ran out of school like a bat out of hell. It was time to take full advantage of summer and enjoy it. The summer went by slowly until I remembered that school was only a couple of weeks away. Suddenly the time I had off from school was becoming lesser and lesser like Father Time was against me. The fear of school came back once again. I wondered if this year would be far worse then the previous year when I was in fourth grade.
Not only was I entering a new grade, I was going into a new kind of class. Back in the fourth grade, I was in the highest class with all of smartest kids in the whole school. Now in the fifth grade I was downgraded to the normal academic class. It felt really sad to be humiliated like that but I knew it was best and would be better in the outcome.
No more teachers and no more degrading. When I walked in to the fifth grade class on the first day, I saw kids that I have not seen in two years since I was in the “higher class.” I was extremely happy to see them again, but a bit down since I made friends in the fourth grade that I now no longer see. I understood that things would change. Who knows though, I could run into my “smart” friends again. I was hoping that would happen to make me feel better. From the very start to the final end, I got along with her. Not once did she lie or mistreat me. I was happy to have had her take care of me, and I enjoyed being around with her. After being introduced to her, I met my fifth grade teacher a little while later. She came in with a bright and flowing beam on her face.
She introduced herself as “Mrs. Scragg.” I sat in the very first row of class which was only a few feet away from her desk where she sat happily. Even when she would stand, it would be by the blackboard which was directly in front of me. Due to this factor her and I always made eye contact with each other. When she spoke to the class, it always felt like she was talking directly to me. At first I was a bit uneasy about this, but as time went on, I became more comfortable with what was happening.
As I got to know her better she started to rebuild my confidence, praise me for all the things that I did right and help me with my weak points. If I ever had any problems, she would pull me aside and walk me right through the situation at hand with my great para, until I was completely fine and I knew what I was doing. She also introduced me to her son Fred, which from the first day I got along with him really well. After talking a lot with him, he introduced me to some bands that he liked. One of his most favorite bands was a heavy metal group called Metallica. He had me listen to one of their albums and I fell in love with it on the first listen.
I was astounded by it. Fred definitely helped me get into heavy metal. Things were looking really bright. When I got my report card, I was naturally fearful. However, I managed to get pretty good grades! Mrs.

Scragg believed in me more then I believed in myself. When I brought my report card home to my family, my Mother and Grandparents were filled happiness. That first report card was just a little glimpse of what good things the future had in store for me that year. I do not remember any grade on that great piece of paper below a B minus. How this amazing teacher brought out such grades in me I still do not know. She made me soar so high.
There was never a rainy day in her classroom. In June when I graduated her class, I left that school with honors and proved that one para and teacher could not bring me down. These grades paved the way to intermediate school. I sadly never got to thank this wonderful woman for righting the wrongs. As I look back, in conclusion fourth to fifth grade was a gigantic transition. Mrs.
Scragg made this adjustment a whole lot better due to how she was. She made things better all around and made all of the darkness around me into light, so I could see again and find my way and get back up from the ground. She helped get rid of my fourth grade attitude. We all need boosters from time to time when we need them the most.
