Canada is often described as a multicultural nation. But what does that mean? Simply stated, it means that Canadians are not of any one cultural background, race or heritage. Instead, Canadians today reflect a vast diversity of cultural heritages and racial groups. The term multiculturalism first came to be used in the 1960’s. It was used to counter the term “Biculturalism.” Multiculturalism then, basically addressed the rights of the French-speaking people and English-speaking people. Multiculturalism now however, addresses the rights of all people who live in Canada regardless of culture.
Multiculturalism has a huge effect on Canada, and without it, Canada would not be what it is today. This multicultural diversity is a result of immigration, government policies, and attitudes. IMMIGRATION- Immigration laws, population trends, mosaic vs melting pot, multiculturalism policy, ethnic and racial diversity, Immigration now, Immigration then GOVERNMENT – Government policies such as the multiculturalism policy, the bilingualism act, economy, society, officials themselves, laws on religions ATTITUDES- towards immigrants, towards gov’t policies, towards diff.
