Mustafa Kemal Ataturk For some recent years all the attention of people around the globe is focused on political and social situation unfolding on Middle East, which is connected with American intervention and occupation of Iraq. Slogans and declarations of American President reveal his desire to make changes in all the aspects of life of Iraqi people, to bring principles of democracy and freedom. But, as it is growing more and more evident, it is not easy to make upheavals in patriotic religious society with thousand years old traditions. Those who are well familiar with the world history of XX century may know that similar attempts of total reformation of life-style of an Islamic community had been undertaken during 20s by an outstanding historical person, brilliant military strategist, politician and social leader of post-Ottoman Turkish nation, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder and the first President of Turkish Republic. In spring of 1923 the Independence war was declared to be over by signing of Lausanne Peace Treaty. Therefore, a new independent Turkish State was established, and Mustafa Kemal, its main liberator and spiritual leader, became the President of Turkish Republic. During the decade of 20s and early 30s he implemented a number of radical reformations, directed on making the country free, developed, modern and contemporary society. In particular, drastic changes were made in political and juridical spheres: by declaring the Republic, Ataturk abolished the reign of the Sultan. He established a new governmental system and introduced a new Civil Code. Separating religion from the government and making religion an independent symbol of faith and freedom was one of the most important reforms. Ataturk eliminated some taxes, and made principal improvements of educational system.
Turkish Republic became the first country of Islamic domination, where women received the same rights with men in marriage, custody, casting votes, education, etc. Many more fundamental changes were made by Ataturk in social and cultural sectors. He changed difficult Arabic alphabet for Latin, and made considerable transformations in linguistic. He introduced a new International calendar and measurement system. He improved the identification code and launched a new system of surnames for Turkish people. Finally, he made changes in dressing style, promoting modern European-like outlook. It is incredible, how a huge nation could go through such radical changes during only a decade! How much of trust and respect to the leader could make people get adapted to a new writing, or calendar. Ataturks achievements were appreciated and valued all around the world.
While alive, granting a title of European man of a year in 1935 was the most honorable mention for his devotion and patriotism. Now the honorable mention is endless love and gratitude from Turkish people, a beautiful Mausoleum in Turkish capital, numerous buildings, bridges, and streets, named after Ataturk in many cities of Turkey. The other honorable mention is numerous books dedicated to his life and inheritance, written and published around the world. Some years ago a cover of popular magazine Time presented a picture of Ataturk. Steady interest to the personality of Ataturk in America is also very honorable. “The name of Ataturk reminds mankind of the historical success of one of the greatest men of this century, his inspirational leadership of the Turkish Nation, his open view in understanding the modern world and his might and courage as a military leader.” John F.
