Three and half years ago, I made a big turning point of my life. I left to the new place that I had have never been before and behind all my friends, memories, and hometown, which represent the 15 years of my life. It was not just curiosity to have a desire to start the new exploration. I had been thinking about my future seriously. I did not want to be a person of narrow outlook and wanted to begin my life in the middle of a strange place to experience the real life. The exchange student program was extrication from where I situated at that time. The main aim of the exchange program was about learning the new culture and experiencing the various kinds of matters through attending high school and fitting in the community. It provided an American host family who could help me to adjust the new environment with a better understanding. Because I knew that good chances hardly come in one’s life, I took it of lifetime. Even though it was not an easy conquest, I experienced the great value of community through the exchange student program.
Just believing my potential abilities, I started with no preparation for my new exploration. Maybe I just trusted that young aged person has more ability to accept a new language faster than a person with full age. I also think that the reason that I had too much confidence on the new situation was that I believed so much in the word which man is the most adjustable being entirely in wherever. I had have lived in the metropolitan area for all my entire life. The place that I had to live with my new host Cho 2 family was the rural area which was more than an hour and half minutes away from the downtown. Just going to the near stores were required some kind of transportation. Around the area, the school bus and my host family’s car and truck were the only transportation to get out of the house.

Attending school was another different matter that I had to face. When I actually realized an encounter with the problems of hearing, reading, and writing skill of English, I had to admit that it was an obstacle course to be well. The most memorable moment was when I first entered the American high school. When I noticed that the spoken language, which I heard from students on the way of getting in the secretary office was not the one that I have used in formal high school, I felt like my brain washed out. The wall of language was greater than what I thought. In order to understand the classes, I began to record the all the lectures and listened it repeatedly at home. Watching television and talking with host family were also very helpful to me. After four to five months, I started to hear and understand things from television and school. Making friends were not easier after I came to this new place. It required a lot of confidence, self-reliance and courage. Since I could hear and speak in English, I could make some close American friends. I was slowly getting into the community where I tried to so hard to fit in.
Involving in some kinds of school activities also gave me a great virtue of adjusting the new situation and having a feeling of belonging. I have been playing the violin since I was nine years old. I love listening and playing music. I strongly believe that music is the world common language that everyone can understand and enjoy whenever and wherever. I signed up orchestra for a school activity after the first Cho 3 semester of the sophomore year. I was happy to have some common ground with the group of the school orchestra through music. It was my first time to play a music piece with various kinds of instruments. I tasted the harmonious sounds that I had never felt through the private lessons. Because there were not much of students who play string instruments, I became very close to the “string group” in the orchestra. We had a reception most of everyday after school. When I recall my memory of playing the violin with them, I had hardly felt tired or bored and rather enjoyed the every moment.
