My name is Brittany Surface. My dad is in the military therefore we have moved around a lot. I was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina in a military hospital. However in the year of 2001 we moved to South Carolina and have been fortunate enough to still be here. At one point the Army transferred my dad to Chicago for 2 years while we were still in South Carolina. As a family we decided that he would go alone and then he would return to SC. SC is an awesome place to call home it is absolutely beautiful and have allowed us to meet some extraordinary people!
I have always been taught to do my best and to strive for academic excellence. My short term goals are to pass my classes with a 3.0 or higher. Grow closer in my walk with God, and build relationships that will last a lifetime. My goals for my life are to graduate from the teacher education program and then later to become certified in special needs education. I feel God had led me to this because of all the trials and challenges I have had to work through during my life. I have struggled from a lot of medical problems, some of which affect my ability to use my limbs properly and took almost a year to diagnose. At one point just over a year ago I was unable to write or do almost anything by myself. I would drink my meals instead of eating simply because I wanted to be independent . So because of this I understand what it feels like to be misunderstood and to have to rely on people to help me with things that should be easy. I want to make a difference in their life and make sure that they know that they aren’t stupid, they are special and God created them just the way they are supposed to be.

No child should have to leave or choose not to attend school just because of their mental or physical disabilities! Just a few months ago I thought I was going to be unable to attend college much less stay on campus! While other colleges basically said figure it out, CIU has done everything in their power to allow me to succeed and for that I am eternally grateful. This is what I want to do for young children with special needs, there is a light inside them ready to burst out we just have to help them let their light shine! One of the Bible verses that has inspired me is Philippians 2 13-14 (Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. )This verse inspires me because to me it means to never give up and to keep working towards your future not what has happened in the past. Also to focus on what God has put on my heart to achieve while I am here on this Earth.
I have always loved reading and have always been fairly good at it. I did a reading program at my elementary school and completed it while earning lots of prizes along the way. However writing is a different story. When I was younger, I remember sitting at our kitchen table crying over writing a simple one paragraph summary. While I have gotten over my fear and anxiety over writing to a certain degree I still do not enjoy doing it. I don’t consider myself to be a gifted writer, however I work hard and do my best to produce adequate papers. During my high school years I spent an exuberant amount of time in doctors’ offices, hospitals, and even traveling up to 16 hours to see a specialist. Due to this I missed a lot of classes and skipped a lot of papers simply because they were the easiest thing to free up time. Because of this most my writing experiences were during my earlier years. I look forward to becoming a better writer while in your class.
