During my short experience in nursing, I have come to the realization that my practice evolves daily based on what I learn, see and often times teach. In this paper I will discuss the reasons for why I have chosen to be a nurse as well as outline the foundation of my philosophy on nursing. Naturally being a nurse I thrive on goals that can be measured, so I will also cover my own personal goals with regard to professional growth. Choice of Nursing
My decision to pursue nursing came as no surprise to most of my family. I truly enjoy caring for others and equally share a strong position to people being treated with dignity and respect. But if I had to say what really pushed me, I would say that it was because of a turn in my mom’s health. Six years ago my mom was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Coming from a very traditional Mexican family, my mom was very discrete when it came to any ailments that kept her from caring for others. She became increasingly weak and very anemic until one day she finally decided she should be evaluated. I remember feeling so helpless and vulnerable. All this time my mom had taken care of us and at this moment all I wanted to do was understand what was going on so that I could help make her situation better. Unfortunately our care was less than desirable. I decided then that I would be a nurse. I would take the challenge to help those in my community to understand more about their condition without making them feel incompetent to ask questions. I wished I could say that I choose to be a nurse because a nurse inspired. On the other hand, as I work side by side with my colleagues, there are a group of nurses that I believe in so strongly that they make me want to be the best I can be everyday. Essence of Nursing
The Term Paper on Nursing and Care
The concept of Synergy can be applied to the practice of nursing by means of education and service. To obtain Synergy in nursing the nurse’s knowledge and skills are able to meet the individual needs of the patient population that is presented. Currently in Western Pennsylvania, there is a rising number maternal substance abuse during pregnancy. This epidemic in turn creates a different type of ...
I believe that nursing was born even beyond Florence Nightingale For years people have been caring for others in trying to heal them. Beliefs and Values I believe that every patient; regardless of their ethnicity, level of intelligence or ability to pay, should be allowed the opportunity to medical treatment when necessary. Patients should also be included in the plan of care and decision making. While our primary focus is to care for our patients, providing care to family in terms of support and education is equally important. Families and significant others in my strongest opinion should respect the wishes of their loved ones. The information the medical team provides them can often help them to understand why the plan for care may change or the consequences of further treatment.
Having worked with my fellow health care providers for the past three years, I have come to value their efforts in staying positive in times of change. The biggest threat over the last couple years has been about the government mandating how they carry out a treatment plan. I believe that while there are algorithms for managing care, not all patients fit the picture at times. As a nurse and a mother to three amazing children, my health should model healthy behaviors and lifestyle. However, we all carry some genetic “gift” that keeps on giving even beyond what we can do. Currently, I am blessed to be in good health and functioning adequately along with a good cup of coffee. Vision for the Future
Time seems to wait for no person and flies by without notice. The next two years I am certain will go by quickly and will reflect on the studies of a young nurse (in years of experience) having completed a bachelors degree in nursing and followed up with a certification in critical care.
In the next five years I see myself in education. I would love the opportunity to share in the learning of future nurses or enhance the learning of our fellow peers. I am uncertain if the opportunity would be in my current hospital but I would welcome the opportunity and feel confident that I will be ready.
The Term Paper on Explain How Important the Nurse Patient Relationship
Peplau (1952) observed the nurse as a fundamental tool for change whilst explaining how powerful the nurse-patient relationship is. The nurse approaches the relationship with understanding and experience obtained personally through their lives but also through their training and work. Generally, it is considered the more training and work experience a nurse has, the more therapeutically effective ...
Ten years from now I see myself working in a role at a university level and working along side a primary physician possibly in a clinical setting. Perhaps by this time more hospitals will be employ nurse practitioners as hospitalists. Summary
I am fortunate to have a strong support system that has enabled me to pursue a career and further my education. I strive to do the best at all times and commit myself to high expectations in everything I do. I believe it takes a certain level of courage to take on the goals I have set out for myself.
Meeting high expectations can set me back at times. Mostly because when I fail to meet those expectations I have a tendency to feel inadequate even though I did the work in attempts to meet the goal. I need to remember to just keep focused and keep grounded on what has brought me to this point in my life and in my professional career.
