My Side of The Mountain is about a young boy named Sam Gribley who is sick of living in an overpopulated New York City apartment, so he runs away to live in the wilderness. Sam knows it is going to be hard to go live out in the middle of the forest with no stores or people, and that he is going to have to live off the resources that the forest provides him with.
Sam takes with him very few supplies: a penknife, a ball of cord, an ax, $40, and some flint and steel. Sam is a smart kid and he knows many wilderness survival skills. Some of the skills he uses are hallowing out a tree stump (to live in), making hooks out of wood for fishing, hunting animals for food and other things (like clothes) with homemade tools, and using plants for spices and food.
One-day reporters find out about Sam and how he has been living out in the wilderness all by himself. Sam ends up going home because he wanted to be with his family, although he still wanted to live in the forest. When he goes back his parents are very happy to have him back. Sam’s parents wanted to give him what he truly wants, to live in the wilderness with his family. His parents announce how they are going to build a house out in the wilderness and that they will all live together.
My Side Of The Mountain is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone. The book really made me think how we all take life for granted. Throughout the whole book I had a mental picture of what was going on. I am looking forward to reading My Side Of The Mountain again.
