The set pieces in this essay are the bus, the hotel lobby, and the boat restaurant that Judith visits throughout her journey. At the bus she is being stereotyped as nice, naïve but at the same time as being dumb just for being a Latina. She takes everything with a smile. Even though, this is done in a comic way; which doesn’t seem too harsh but still hurts her feelings because everyone is laughing at her. At the hotel lobby she feels hostile. She is seen by the man whom she finds walking to her room as a cartoon character, “Evita” as he called her. She is seen as if she was a prostitute perhaps because she is a Latina and the clothing she was wearing.
Finally, she explains that most Latin women are stereotyped as being good domestics. For example, at the boat restaurant she was walking with her notebook which had her poems and a lady calls her over. She thought it was because the lady wanted her autograph but instead she proceeded to order a cup of coffee thinking that Judith was the waitress. Perhaps it was ignorance or a stereotype for being a Latina which bring in the pacing techniques being Judith’s clothing and her jewelry. Identifying the way she portrays herself to other people. She learns that in order to fit into the Anglo Society she needs to change the clothing she wears and not wear too much jewelry.

Judith wants everyone who reads this essay to understand what Latin woman go through for being stereotyped as a Latina. Even though, she has earned PHD and has worked hard to be educated and to have what she has there are people who see her just as another Latina. Meaning that most people think that she is uneducated who works as a domestic, waitress, housekeeper, etc. She feels that everywhere she goes someone tends to make a rude comment or remark. In some cases most people don’t see this as rude but Judith does. Perhaps because the comments and remarks are being made to Judith and she is the Latina.

She also blames media for being stereotyped. The thesis of this essay would be that Judith is tired of being stereotyped. But at the same time she doesn’t realize that she is also stereotyping the same people that stereotype her. Judith being a Latina herself believes that there is a myth surrounding Latinas because she has gone through many experiences where people were ignorant and perhaps even naïve to her. This makes her believe that most of the people she meets will be the same as the ones she has met in the past. She emphasizes that her education has helped her come through all of the negative parts of her life as a Latina. And that no matter how many people try to bring her down by stereotyping her she will always take everything with a smile and overcome the obstacles.
