Natural High
For years I was satisfied with typical hobbies and entertainment until one day I asked myself “Is this all there is?” When thinking of what to do, I suddenly felt like doing something outrageous. The first thought that came to mind was sky diving. How out of control, I thought: the speed and the element of danger. I never knew what a natural high was until that day: the drive to Sky Dive City, flying to the drop zone, jumping, landing and living to talk about it.
On January 5, 1999, two close friends and I set out for an adventure of a lifetime. I was as giddy as a schoolgirl; just talking about it gave us all goose bumps. A certain feeling came over us all; none of us ever experienced such a lively bliss. After we arrived at the famous Sky Dive City, the butterflies in the stomach cliché became a reality and kicked into high gear. Looking up over the jump sight, small explosions of color filled the sky as jumpers pulled their chutes and descended gracefully to the ground. After approximately an hour of prep and instructions, we were ready to take on this challenge.

The walk to the plane was so surreal, I couldn’t believe that I was actually going through with this, realizing that once I was in the plane, there was no turning back. After about fifteen minutes in the air, we reached the drop zone. It was time. The first set of jumpers approached the open door; the sound of the wind rushing by was intense. They locked their arms together and excitedly exited the plane. Next up were the first time solo jumpers, who had been practicing on the ground earlier going through their jump plan like a choreographed dance routine. After both my friends had exited the plane, it was finally my turn to jump. As the instructor and I approached the door of the plane, all of the nervousness that I had been feeling seemed to disappear; I was fully present with the moment.

Looking out was electrifying. I have seen the earth from this perspective before on a flight to Las Vegas, but never from a wide open door. The instructor shouted “One, two, three,” and we were out of the plane in a total free fall. The feeling was incredible. The force of the wind against my face made my cheeks flap around uncontrollably, and the sound was deafening.
Trying to take it all in, I looked in all directions, and as the ground seemed so far away, my brain was in overdrive trying to deal with the sensory overload; focusing on any one landmark was impossible. After free falling for sixty seconds, it was time to pull the chute. I had some reservations about the chute opening before I left the plane but at the moment when I pulled the cord, the feeling of uncertainty went away as I looked up into the chute opening without a snag. The intense speed and the overwhelming sensory over load that made up the last

60 seconds of my life was over and a calm relaxing euphoria settled in as my instructor and I floated peacefully down to the landing zone. As we approached the ground, the speed seemed to increase momentarily. And then like a bird landing gracefully, we were on the ground and quickly were reunited with my friends. The feeling was so great, I wanted to tell everybody I knew about my experience. Sky diving was the single most exciting event to take place in my life and I would recommend it to anyone.
The feeling of elation stays with you forever. To this day I get goose bumps just thinking about it. I now understand the feeling of a natural high and it can only be described as an electrifying, out-of-control emotional rollercoaster of uncertainty. Since then I have experienced several other natural highs: marriage, my son Aiden and my daughter Sarah; however, these encounters all stem from the day I jumped from a plane with my best friend, my wife.
