Immigration Mexico can be a beautiful place to be. Well, in certain places. As for me, I’m nowhere near any place in Mexico that has ‘beautiful’ traits. Of course they’re there, but you have to look closely to see them. I’m from Coicoyan de las Flores, Oaxaca, Mexico. It is known as one of the poorest places in Mexico. Where most people live in huts and kids have to suffer in poor conditions. It’s a challenge to survive in a place like this.
Because of the way I’ve lived my life for 19 years, is why I immigrated to the United States of America, to live a better life, get a better education, and start a new life. One of the main reasons I want to leave Mexico and move to America is for a better life. I’ve heard it is a beautiful place up there in the states, I know it may not all be beautiful, but I’m willing to sacrifice it. I want a better life, I want to be educated, I want a better future. Another important thing is my future.
I do plan on getting married and having kids and having my kids have kids. I want that, I want to be a parent, and I want to be a grandparent or even a great grandparent someday. But I can’t have that if I stay and Mexico. If I have kids in Mexico, they wouldn’t be able to survive. I’m surprised I have survived this long. My parents didn’t, neither did my older sister. Once she died I made a realization that I cannot live here anymore. When you want to become a legal US citizen you have to go through a process called, naturalization.

It involves many steps to get through such as, seeing if I am eligible to become a citizen. It basically means I need to know how to read, write, speak English, and know some history about America. I also needed to complete an application, get myself photographed, send the application to the Service Center, get finger printed, get interviewed by the USCIS, and wait to receive their feedback on my interview. After they had made their decision I had to take the oath and finish my naturalization
with finally becoming a US citizen (“8 Steps to Become a US Citizen. “).
After I finished the process of becoming a US citizen, I needed to decide on where I wanted to live. I decided I wanted to live in Chicago. I’ve heard a lot about it, it sounds so pretty and nice and there is a lot to do there. I know about the tough weather conditions it has, with the cold winters and the hot summers, but I think I can manage. I planned on living in an apartment to start myself off; I didn’t plan on getting a car or anything.
I thought it would be better to walk, get exercise and it’s better for the environment as well. Once I arrived and settled myself in to my new place, I went looking for a job. I started off as an intern at a close by coffee shop called Starbucks. After a year, I finally got comfortable with my new surroundings and made more friends that I could talk to. They come by my apartment every other Saturday for a ‘girl’s night’. By then I was extremely grateful I had the opportunity to move to the States. It really has changed my life.
Now, here I am, 28 years old, happily married, I have a two year old boy with a baby girl on the way. I’m officially moved into a gorgeous house with my husband raising our boy. I got a better job at an elementary school, helping the kids who only speak Spanish and helping them with their English. Life is absolutely amazing and not only am I glad with where I am in life, but I was also lucky enough to run into my mother’s sister in town. She told me her story and I exchanged mine. I was like a little family reunion, but for two. It felt really good to have some family around.
