Observation of Shopping Shopping plays an important role in our lives. It is interesting to study the psychology of shopping, i.e. what makes the customer buy this or that thing. Shopping is a competition and communication between the salesman and a customer. When the buyer comes to a store there should be some very strong factors which would urge him to make a purchase. The process of shopping is a complicated process which is going beyond just acquiring a new thing in exchange of money.
This is a communication mixed with excitement, curiosity and the satisfaction or the disappointment with the thing acquired. When we visit the stores we witness the competition between the salespeople for us, customers. They are using various technologies to attract the costumer, or it is better to say, to win the customers attention because the competition is very strong. The costumers buy for their own reason and it is very difficult sometimes to understand this reason. It is very difficult to influence this process. If costumers did not buy for their reasons then they would buy for the reason of the shops and this would be the end of the costumers needs satisfaction.
The initial purpose to buy is based mainly on emotions1. Emotions push us to buy this or that thing. We want to get this or that thing because we receive the information on it and this thing seems to correspond to our needs. Very often this correspondence is seemed only. Shopping is a leisure activity. People enjoy buying things because the process of buying and everything connected with it is a kind of entertainment. When people visit stores the process of communication brings certain satisfaction to them because people are acting as buyers and the salespeople do their best to sell their things.

Buyers experience the respectful attitude and the increased attention which is pleasant for any person. US consumers spend an average of 41% of their personal income on discretionary items2. These items are not of absolute need but are things of luxuries which they buy just because they want to posses them. When we buy something we make the gifts to ourselves and these gifts are valuable because it is very difficult to assume that we are mistaken. It is more difficult psychologically to confess that we have bought the useless thing. We may blame somebody else in making the useless purchase but not ourselves. This is the reason that most of our purchases emotionally positive and we enjoy them unless we buy something of a very low quality which was hidden. In this case we always find a good excuse; it is not our fault but the fault of a seller or a manufacturer.
The humorists quote “I shop therefore I am.” reflects the essence of shopping. We work to earn money and we earn money to buy things. We do not plan in details what to buy while earning money but once money earned we need to get rid of it, to buy things and then we work again to earn money to get rid of it and this never-ending cycle is our life itself. It is very difficult to distinguish our needs from our wishes. It is no matter if our needs coincide with our wishes. Any purchase makes us happy because the thing acquired in the shop is the evaluation of our job.
Money is just conventional sign to be transferred into goods and services. The freedom to choose the evaluation of our work by ourselves makes us twice happy. We are restricted in our shopping by the finance only and this brings us ultimate pleasure. We live to work and we work to live. In this context the above mentioned quote is true. We may play the hypocrite declaring that we like our job because it is interesting or useful only but the main purpose of our work is to make purchases or it is better to say get the evaluation of our work.
