In the play Oedipus Rex, Oedipus has many negative qualities. The first flaw is stubbornness. Oedipus shows stubbornness, when he doesn’t listen to the truth. Oedipus shows it by not listening to Tiresias: “Enough I won’t listen to this sort of talk from you, Damn you! Get out of here, quickly(29).” Oedipus requested Tiresias for the truth, instead of taking advice from him he took everything in wrong way. He didn’t listen to his advice, at all and decided to go with his own decision. Another example was when Oedipus blamed Creon. He therefore concludes Creon, his brother-in-law and royal colleague, wants to grab all royal powers for himself and to that purpose he thinks that Tiresias has been telling him lies:, “Don’t you see your plan is foolish to hunt for a crown without number of friends(35) “. Oedipus has refused to listen to the truth in many parts of the story. Although Oedipus is a caring ruler who starts seeking an answer to people’s problems he cannot stand it if he doesn’t get what he immediately wants.
Another flaw Oedipus shows is his intelligence. He is blind to the truth in the beginning of the play, but in the end he loses his pride and is humbled by his downfall. Oedipus wanted to help the people from the plague. He started declaring curses to the killer of Laius: “That man whoever may be, I banish from his land where I sit, no one shall take him in or speak to him”(15).
Oedipus used his intelligence by setting curses so that the killer would come forward. His main goal was to find out the truth the whole time but it unfortunately led to the downfall of Laius. Another example, was when Oedipus used his intelligence to figure out the riddle of the Sphinx: “The Sphinx with her riddling songs forced us to give up the mystery and think about recent matters”. Everyone was worried about urgent matters so they did not focus on the killer of Laius. Everyone knew that Oedipus was highly intelligent people cared for him because he was their leader. Oedipus wanted to give them the same respect as well so he always looked out for his people. But, due to his fate his intelligence teamed up with his arrogance. Therefore, Oedipus’ intelligence set up him for trouble.

Oedipus makes quick decisions. In the beginning of the play Oedipus makes a hasty decision by dismissing Creon. Oedipus’ assumptions lead him to his downfall.: “Do you have the face to come to my palace-you who are convicted as my murderer, attempting to steal my throne”. This was one of the phrases that Oedipus used by talking to Creon. He made an assumption and caused consequences to Creon. Oedipus always makes quick decisions without knowing the result. However in the very beginning of the story Oedipus made his first quick decision by running away from Corinth. He didn’t want to cause consequences to his parents so Oedipus decided to run away. Instead of staying with his adopted parents, Oedipus decided to come to Delphi. Therefore, Oedipus decisions weren’t always the best decisions. Lastly another example Oedipus showed his hastiness was when he killed Laius. This affected Delphi because Laius was their ruler. However, as a result all of Oedipus’ quick decisions led to bad decisions.
Oedipus was also very quick tempered in this play. In the beginning of the story, Oedipus killed Laius due to his anger. It involves an incident that happened before the action of the play, is challenged at first at the crossroads where three paths meet. He was very challenged and hot tempered because an oracle told him that he was going to kill his parents. Oedipus took immediate action and ran away from Corinth. When Oedipus was on his journey of running away he seeks upon many strangers trying to run over him. Oedipus was very quick tempered so he decided to kill all of them. One of the strangers was Oedipus’ real father. Another example was when Oedipus showed anger was with Tiresias: “You scoundrel; You would enrage a lifeless stone- Will nothing move you?”(21).

He wanted to know the truth from Tiresias but instead of taking as it an advantage, Oedipus used it against him. He got mad at Tiresias for telling the truth because he thought he was making up lies.
