Throughout his life he has felt alone, causing him to feel isolated. Crooks still feels like he is alone. ??And now there ain?t a colored man on this ranch an? there?s jus? one family in Soledad.?? Crooks resides within a worn-down shed that leans off the wall of the barn. Crooks is only permitted to sleep in the barn. Sleeping with the animals says a lot about the feelings given to African Americans during this time. There is one four-paned window on one side of the room, which provides most of the light during the day. Along the other wall is the doorway that led into the barn. A long box filled with straw provides a place for him to sleep. His room is about 5 feet by 5 feet and the floor covered with straw. Crooks has more possessions than any other man does on the ranch. He has been there for a while and had accumulated a lot of things. ?This room was swept and fairly neat, for Crooks was a proud, aloof man. He kept his distance and demanded other people kept theirs.? Crooks respects the views of others and in return he wants his views and opinions respected too.

S?pose you had to sit out here an? read books. Sure you could play horseshoes till it got dark, but then you got to read books. Books ain?t no good.?? Crooks? skin color disables him from being around many of the other men on the ranch. He must turn to books so as not to get lonely, but when that fails, he has no where else to go. Nothing would suit him more than someone to talk to, someone to share ideas with, and someone to play cards with.
