PURPOSE
To investigate which one of these methods (i.e. using a skimmer, absorbent, dispersant) is more efficient in removing oil spill from the water.
PROBLEM
Which method would be most effective in removing oil spills in water?
Using vacuum skimmers
Using absorbents
Using dispersants
HYPOTHESIS
The experimenter hypothesizes that using absorbents will be most efficient in removing oil spills in water.
Variables
Independent Variable- the different methods
Dependant Variable- the efficiency of the different methods
Materials
Container for oil and water mixture
Graduated beaker
Vegetable oil
Water
Medicine dropper

The Essay on Mixture Of Sodium Or Potassium Soap Water Oil
The Two-Faced Detergent Whether soil particles are attached to carpet fibers, wood floors or restroom sinks, they need to be removed. But how is this done? Most of us wipe or scrub a dirty surface with soap and water without a second thought about how they actually work to remove soil. The process of removing dirt begins at the molecular level. In order to understand how soap works, we must first ...
Shredded paper towel
Spoon
Powdered or liquid detergent
Procedure
Make a table for your observations
Using the graduated cylinder, add 150 ml of water to the containers
Using the graduated cylinder, measure 20 ml of vegetable oil. Slowly pour the oil into the first container so that the surface of the water is covered. Repeat this process for the other two methods. Clean up the water or oil that you spill
Your task is to clean up the “oil spill” using a skimmer, sorbents, and a dispersant. Try to remove as much oil from the surface of the water as possible. Try not to allow the oil to mix with the water. Observe which method works most quickly and recovers the most oil.
Sorbents- tear your paper towel into pieces. Scatter the shredded paper towel onto the surface of the water in your second container. Once the pieces of paper towel have absorbed the oil, use the spoon to remove the oil- soaked paper towel in the cup. Continue adding and removing shredded paper towel until you have removed as much as possible. Record you observations in the table.
Dispersants- add a spoonful of detergent to the third container. Then use the spoon to collect the oil. Continue adding detergent and collecting the oil until you have removed as much oil as possible. Record your observation in the table.
In your table, rank each method to show which method you think was the most efficient.

Observations
Skimmer, Sorbents, Dispersants
While observing the skimmer I noticed that the medicine dropper was the worst method out of all the three methods. While observing it took up the most amount of time. Both oil and water, when placed in the container there was more water than oil. It also was hard to get the oil out because you had to squeeze it in then let go and most of the water was sucked up and not a lot of oil was absorbed into the medicine dropper. While observing the skimmer I noticed that the paper towel was the best method out of all three methods. While observing it took the least amount of time. When we put the pieces of paper towel in all of the oil came straight to the paper towel so it would absorb the oil faster. Also the paper towel was hard to remove, because we had to use our hands instead of a spoon and it was hard. The detergent was easy to remove but it took up a little bit of water but most of the oil, but it took only a little bit longer to be removed. Also it was easier to remove the oil when placing the spoon in. The detergent was also the soapiest when we mixed it with the oil. The detergent was the only method that did not take the least time but it did not take the most time either but it was in between.
The Term Paper on Authoritative Oil Extraction Methods Introduction
Oil Extraction Process is one important processing during making oil process. There are many kinds of OIL EXTRACTION METHODS in actual applications. Wintone shares oil extraction methods with more than 20 years oil mill machinery experience. CO2 Extracted: CO2 extracted oils are extracted using fluid carbon dioxide as the solvent. Carbon dioxide is converted to liquid using high pressure making it ...

Dispersants
Dispersants can be used to dissolve oil slicks. When used appropriately, dispersants can be an effective method to respond to an oil spill. They may rapidly remove large amounts of certain oil types from the sea surface by transferring it into the sea water. Wave energy will cause the oil slick to break up into smaller oil droplets that are rapidly thinned and later biodegraded by the micro-organisms occurring naturally in the marine environment. They can also delay the formation of persistent water-in-oil emulsions.
Skimmers
An oil skimmer is a machine that separates a liquid from particles floating on it or from another liquid. A common application is removing oil floating on water. These technologies are commonly used for oil spill remediation but are also commonly found in industry. Oil skimmers are commonly found in three types’ weir, oleophillic and drum. Weir skimmers function by allowing the oil floating on the surface of the water to flow over a low floating dam. These devices will collect water when oil is no longer present. Drum skimmers function by using a rotating element such as a drum, to which adheres. The oil is wiped from the surface of the drum and collected.Oleophilic skimmers function not by their operation but by the component used to collect the oil. Ropes, discs, or drums are treated with a substance or otherwise made to adhere oil.
The Essay on Exxon Valdez Oil Water Ship
The Exxon Valdez oil tanker left the Trans Alaska Pipeline terminal at 9: 12 PM March 23, 1989. The Exxon Valdez was the companies second newest tanker, it was 987 feet long and was carrying 53, 094, 510 gallons of crude oil. It's destination, Long Beach California. William Murphy, an expert ship's pilot had been hired to steer the ship through the Valdez Narrows. Joe Hazelwood, the captain, and ...

Questions
When you slowly poured the oil into the water did it sink or float? Explain it in terms of density. When we poured the oil into the water the oil floated instead of sinking. It floated because the oil is less dense than water.
Which of the three methods do you think will have the least impact on the environment? I think the absorbents will have the least affect, because they do not take long to remove the oil from the water.
If a strong wind was blowing and the surface of the water was rough, which method do you think would work best? Explain? I think that the skimmers will work best when the surface is rough, because when the water is rough it would be easier to get the oil out than on a flat surface.
Was cleaning up your oil spill more difficult than you thought? Explain? Cleaning up your oil was harder than I thought but it was not too hard. I thought all you had to do was put oil in and take it out but I thought it would be easy to remove the oil.

Oil Slicks on Lake Maracaibo, Venezeula Conclusion
Application
Oil spills can be applied to the real world by having oil spills which affect the aquatic life. It can also affect the real world because it can destroy our ecosystem. The following points shows oil spills of over 100,000 tonnes or 30 million US Gallons.
