The initial theory of continental drift was put forward by a German meteorologist Alfred Wegener in 1915. This theory did not seem credible until it was connected with the plate tectonic theory in the mid 1960’s. The tectonic plate theory had an advantage over previous predictions as it could be supported by observed occurrences. One such thing that supports these two theories is that seen from space the continents look as if they might once have been joined together.
This possible idea was then proved to be almost certainly true when fossils of similar plants, animals and similar rock types of a corresponding time period were found on the east coast of South America and the West coast of Africa.
This could be viewed by many as being an explanation but animals have been known to cross oceans and seeds of plants have also been known to travel great distances such as coconuts to other continents. For example a bird might fly from one continent to another and settle in it’s new home where it is subjected to the same climate, food and predators as it was subjected to at it’s original home and so might evolve in the same way. Similar rock types can also be found throughout the world and so this is not conclusive evidence.
It could be proved in the future if measurements of the continents location were taken down over a long period to see whether they moved consistently in their predicted directions but this would be hard to prove as it would take hundreds of years to prove the continents truly were moving in consistent directions. It has though been measured that the continents do move a couple of centimetres each year and so far they have been moving in constant unchanging directions thus giving a good hint that this part of proof toward the theory is true.
The Term Paper on Application Of Grand Theory To Nursing Practice
In today’s world there are many nursing theories and theorists that not only define the nursing profession, but also are used as the basis to guide a nurse in his or her current practice. Meleis defines nursing theory “as a conceptualization of some aspect of nursing reality communicated for the purpose of describing phenomena, explaining relationships between phenomena, predicting consequences or ...
It had been known for some time that earthquakes and volcanoes that exist in a line were connected, with the exception of places such as Hawaii and other small islands. This puzzled scientists until the tectonic plate theory was introduced. The theory supposes that destructive plate boundaries and hot spots can provide an answer. Evidence to support the existence of these plates colliding and forming can be made by using satallite images of Earth. Lines can be plotted of volcanic and earthquake activity which seem to indicate the boundaries of the various plates.
Along these lines of constructive boundaries, new plate and land is being created. One can assume that one day the small growing volcanic island of Iceland sitting on the Atlantic ridge will one day stretch downwards splitting the Atlantic in two. This could have a disastrous consequence on our climate as it would cut off the warm current of the “gulf stream’, which surrounds England’s shores, and therefore reduce the annual temperature which would then become significantly colder.
Where certain plates collide possible predictions can be made as to the destructive consequence at the boundaries e.g. as India moves northwards it would sink under the more dense Eurasian plate. As this happens the collision zone between these continents would cause the Himalayas to rise yet further and who knows how tall Mount Everest could become? Another possible future happening would be that Saudi Arabia, part of the African Plate, would move east and be crushed under the Eurasian plate. In the future, as the African Plate pushes north east due as it is being pushed by the constructive mid-Atlantic ridge, it would in time consume the Indo-Australian plate and the red sea would no longer exist.
The Term Paper on Senkaku Island Dispute
The following essay lays out the problem of the dispute over the Senkaku islands. It begins with a detailed background of the dispute, tracing back to the early 14th century up until modern times, and the three separate claims to the islands from China (People’s Republic of China), Taiwan (Republic of China) and Japan. This is then followed by four different policies on what the United States can ...
Scientists have been puzzled by so called rogue volcanoes which don’t follow the classic patterns of following the plate boundary lines of other volcanoes and earthquakes. A possible theory is that the Earth has particular places in the mantle where heat rises up as “hot spots’, melting the mantle under the crust and breaking to the surface forming isolated volcanoes. The islands of Hawaii are one such example, but they are also in a line. There can’t be many little hot spots all in the same area so one surmises that this line was caused by the volcano initially breaking the surface and as the plate moves it creates another volcano. This process carries on until it forms a ridge of volcanoes creating the islands of Hawaii.
Through looking at the at the past we could predict the future and this would indicate that as the plates carry on moving in their current pattern, the continents will in the future all join up again to form a new super continent just like Pangaea, 200 million years ago.
