Before I tell you my position on the right for a woman to have an abortion, you must know exactly what an abortion is. An abortion is a “Induced termination of pregnancy and expulsion of an embryo or fetus that is incapable of survival.” (The American Heritage Dictionary).
Now that you know what an abortion is it is your turn to decide weather you think a woman has the right to choose. I feel that it is the woman’s right to choose and I feel that if she wants to have the procedure done, and has a way to pay for, that we should not be able to stop her or force her not too.
It is said that in the United States in 1996 doctors performed more than 1.3 million abortions (Painter).
That means that 1.3 million U.S. woman said that don’t want to have a baby and what gives anyone the right to say no to all of those women.
In 1972 the decision of Roe V. Wade, in which the supreme court ruled that a woman has a constitutional right to an abortion during the first six months of pregnancy (United States Government).
This decision was based on many things, but the main reason for the decision is because the supreme court was influenced by what it believes the majority of American people support, showing just how many people agree that women should have the right to choose if they want to have an abortion.
The Essay on Birth Control Abortion Women Decision
How has the policy of birth control and abortion affected the nations of our world in the 20 th and 21 st century? Did you know that in the America there are four thousand abortions a day? The second highest rate in the world! In America we have the right between having an abortion or taking the responsibility to use birth control. In the twentieth century technological advantages has brought ...
Another example of why women should be able to choose is; what if a woman is raped and she feels that she doesn’t want to have the baby because she is just not ready, why can anyone just say that she can’t and deny her of a right which is given to her by the Constitution.
Out of the 1.3 million U.S. women that had abortions in 1996 about twenty percent of them were teenagers under the age of twenty (World Almanac).
Out of all of the abortions only 18.4 percent of woman were married. When you combine these two facts you realize that many of these pregnancies may have been accidents, and that many young woman have this procedure done more than other woman.
According to one study, most woman, seven out of ten, feel that they have made the right choice two years after having the procedure (Elias).
They also said that if the circumstances where the same they would have the procedure done again. According to Serrin Foster of Feminists for Life of America, she says that, three in 10 women feeling regret two years later is a “sizable minority.”
Most studies have also showed that the operation is safe and that there is very little mental danger to having it. One particular study was performed by Arizona State University psychologist Nancy Filipe Russo. She found that having an abortion has no independent effect on mental health, but woman with low self-esteem before pregnancy are more likely to become depressed after the procedure (Elias).
Another way I can prove to you that women should have the right to have an abortion is by telling you exactly what some very influential people think: It was just a few moths ago that both house of Congress have passed a bill that plan to ban “Partial – birth abortions,” in many U.S. states, this bill is most likely going to be vetoed by president Clinton when it reaches his desk sometime later this month (Greenhouse, Justice Appear Set to Reject Law Banning Late Abortion).
On the other hand there are those three out of every ten people who regret having the procedure two years later. Out of that thirty- percent eleven- percent say that they are unsure if they would have the procedure done again, leaving only nineteen percent saying that they would not have the procedure again (Elias).
The Essay on Against Abortion Woman Procedure Lot
A lot of young people in this day and time are having unprotected sex and are not thinking about the consequences. The consequences include obtaining sexually transmitted diseases and a chance that the woman will get pregnant. If the woman gets pregnant, the couple must decide if they want to take on the responsibility of taking care of another life for at least eighteen years. Some couples decide ...
Many people also claim that this procedure is an act of “Feticide.” This is because “Women have the right to ‘terminate pregnancy’ –the right to empty the womb -does not of necessity include a right to feticide” (Greenhouse, Narrow Abortion Case Before Court Leads to a Wider Debate).
Feticide is the intentional destruction of a human fetus (The American Heritage Dictionary).
As of right now having an abortion is illegal in some states such as Nebraska, because in 1997 a law was passed, that is similar to laws that thirty other U.S. states are thinking of passing, saying, “An abortion procedure in which the person performing the abortion partially delivers vaginally a living unborn child before killing the unborn child and completing the delivery. Doctors can be sentenced to up to twenty years in prison for this crime. (Greenhouse, Narrow Abortion Case Before Court Leads to a wider Debate).
However this might soon change as more and more people are speaking up for women’s rights. But because of these changes the number of abortions are declining very quickly. In fact the number of abortions in the U.S. are at its lowest level since 1979. Many people say that this is happening because there are fewer doctors performing the operation, a sharp increase in abortion patient harassment by protestors, and the high price of the operation. This means that there are “Children running around the playgrounds now who wouldn’t otherwise be alive,” says Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee (Hall).
Another disadvantage to abortions are that some of our tax money is actually going into some inmates having this procedure, even if they have been released from prison. A State Supreme Court justice in Watertown, New York issued a temporary order barring a jail inmate from having an abortion until a court hearing on whether county correction officials should pay for the procedure. This is because correction officials have a responsibility to pay for abortions because they are part of inmate’s medical care. But why is our tax money paying for a woman’s abortion if she is out of jail. According to other sources this is an “Issue that arises on a very regular basis,”(Sullivan).

So where can we draw a line saying what a woman can and can’t do? It is her right to choose if she wants this procedure. I hope from all of the information I have showed, you can make the right and clear choice, that a woman should decide for herself if she wants to have an abortion.
