Sales of organic foods has gone up by 20% in the past decade. The reason? Growth hormones for cows, pesticides on fresh produce and antibiotics for poultry. But whether organic chickens and organic apples particularly represent “healthy eating” has been subject to debate for years. Organic foods have never actually been scientifically proven to be any healthier or any more nutritious than ordinary foods, the only difference is the substantial price tag that comes with the organic produce. Ironically, most people who buy organic foods do so because they are worried about the “unsafe” chemicals used on normal food, however, test show that organic food isnt actually any safer than its ordinary counterpart. Others argue that going organic is the “ethical” thing to do, although this is rejected by many others, who claim that jumping on the organic bandwagon is more about snobbery than saving the planet.
Although everone has seen the word “organic” dotted around their local supermarket, not everone understands what’s behind the notorious green label. In food production lingo, “organic” refers to the regulations which replace artificial additives like pesticides which natural substances or alternative techniques. For meat, the animals must be raised without the aid of growth hormones or antibiotics, and they must be fed a strict natural diet. Organic foods are riding a surge of popularity, with the organic food industry worth as much as £15 million in the UK in 2009, and where consumers go, companies follow. Everyone from Kraft to Coca Cola has jumped on the organic bandwagon in some way, shape or form. However, is this new belief in going organic due to faith or fact? The truth is that the mass migration to organic foods is definitely not down to hard scientific evidence. Infact, one would have their work cut out if they wanted to find any actual evidence that supports the view that organic food is better for us, or indeed, for the planet. Even the FSA (Food Standards Agency) has added to this truth, releasing an official statement about organic foods.

Some celebrities are largely associated with the hype of organic produce. Many of us have seen the tubs of Rachels Organic yogurts stacked in the supermarket aisles with their pretty daisy print cartons, but has anyone actually dug a little deeper? Even the official Rachels Organic website fails to explain exactly why their yogurts are better than the non-organic ones. So then why do celebs such as Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall and Gwyneth Paltrow insist on publicly declaring their love for all things organic? The fact that there is no evidence of organic food is healthier than normal food back up the idea that people are going organic as a result of the growing need for snobbery rather than a growing need for healthier lifestyles. Even celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay slammed the insatiable apetite celebrities posses for organic food, calling it “ridiculous”. But there is one fascinating statistic about the celeb followers of the “organicult” – most of the believers are celeb mums. Jessica Alba, Gywneth Paltrow, Oprah Winfrey, Ashlee Simpson and Marcia Cross are, to name a few, some of the organic mums.. but why?

How would you feel if your child had just started school and all the other parents considered themselves as superheros because only the creme de la creme of foods was good enough for their kids – the organics. How would you feel if you turned on the TV to see a new celeb mum being praisedfor converting to the “benefits” of organics? The simple fact is that it would make you want to go out and buy the organics, whether it was out of a need to fit in or out of guilt. Media pressure is actually a huge contributing factor in the growth of the organic food industry , many families simply wouldnt spend the money on organic produce. These celebrities are piling pressure onto new mums, not only are they giving them the guilt trip into making them buy organics, the whole fad has gone to such an extent that the new celeb mums are starting a new trend of headline grabbing by claiming that they managed to shift the baby weight b sticking to a strictly organic diet. Many people know that losing baby weight is all down to plenty of exercise and a healthy diet. We already know that organic food and ordinary food are 6 and half a dozen nutrition-wise, so how would organic food help? It has now become like a holy grail for new mums; is all these celebs can shed 2 stone in 2 months on an organic diet then so can I! Wrong. Celebs lose weight with the help of famous personal trainers and the media pressure means if they dont lost the weightthey need to may as well say “so long” to any deals they have with clothing lines, makeup lines, or tv deals. The sad fact is, many people are forced to biy food that is organic down to media pressure even though they cant afford it.

The difference in price between organic and normal foods is substantial. If you were to fill up a fruitbowl with organic fruit it was cost you roughly £2 more than if you were to fill it with ordinary fruit. Bananas are about 11p more expensive, apples are about 18p more expensive and strawberries are about 39p more expensive, to name a few. This means that if you filled up your fruitbowl once a week for a year, you’d be pouring a staggering £104 down the drain every year. Most families just simply cannot afford that- fact.
However, the money wasted on organic foods could quite easily be spent making genetically modified foods for poorer countries then poverty would be made much less of a problem, possibly even eradicated. Thousands of men, women, and children starve every day around the world, even though they would actually be able to access GM food, which can be more beneficient economically and every individual can access them. They are pest and insect resistant, meaning they could provide nutrition for people in third world contries, also they can beat harsh weather conditions making it perfect for third world contries. Scientists have even managed to create drought resistant crops, which could save so many more lives, if only ore funding was put into it. These crops could be transported into poorer countries in the form of seeds, which makes self sufficiency even easier. Again, if more money was spent on this then the death rate in poorer countries would crash dramatically, because these new crops could be packed with the essential vitamins and minerals to make people a lot healthier, especially people who are at desperate risk of dying from malnutrition. But instead of spending money developing these crops, we are spending millions on (pointless) organic produce.
