In this movie he (Othello) promises to marry the lovely Desdemona (Irene Jacob).
In this movie Othello ignores the advice of his intended’s father, who tells him that there is somebody else who pull the wool over Othello’s eyes (inveigle).
Othello’s aide, Iago (Kenneth Branagh) who is jealous of Cassio (Nathaniel Parker, the director’s real-life brother) that he has the lower rank from Cassio, then begins to incite Othello to make Othello believe that Desdemona and Cassio are carrying on an affair.
Because Iago has lack evidence about the affair of Desdemona and, Iago manages to manipulate Othello’s suspicious, to make Othello trust toward Iago. From the context above the writer would like to review Othello the movie in the love relationship point of view between Othello and Desdemona by using Sternberg’s triangular theory of love. ANALYSIS As it is shown in the movie that Iago has successfully influences Othello to hate Cassio and to disturb him with a great jealousy that finally kills Desdemona, Othello’ wife whom he really loves.
But do Othello really loves Desdemona in case that he kills someone he loves; Desdemona? It might be seen that Othello does really loves Desdemona that is why he kills Desdemona, but there are few possibilities that can happen in the relationship between Othello and Desdemona. Based on the prejudice that Othello does love Desdemona or otherwise, the writer decides to apply Sternbergs’ triangular theory of love on approach to the answer of questioning Othello’s love to Desdemona. Sternberg’s triangular theory of love devides into three division and then has four combinations of those three division.
The Essay on Othello Desdemona Emilia Iago
Othello Essay By Samantha Dharma In Shakespeare's "Othello", the role of women is deeply emphasized; the significant characters of the play Othello, Iago, and Casio, each have a lady that stands behind him. These women each have commitment to remain faithful and respect their husband's needs, especially Desdemona and Emilia. Desdemona is the victim of this play; Shakespeare portrays her as the ...
See the diagram below. The Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love. [pic] First division of Sternberg’s triangular theory of love is Passion. Passion contains the desire of one to touch someone he/she interests and it could be the desire to have a sexual notion. Second division is Liking or Intimacy. Intimacy is kind of love that usually drive someone to feel save by sharing his feeling or to feel comfort of his/her secret even in really personal secret so that this division is usually the relationship between one to his others as a friend of sharing.
It could be his/her friend or wife/husband but still as a friend of sharing. Third division is Commitment. This division describes a love which decides to be committed. It is usually in marital relationship so that this love division is relationship between one and other in a marital/commitment relationship. Those three division would have four kinds of combination that contain two or more divisions. Those combinations would belong to people with its variety. One would have only a combination of two divisions, but others may have more than two which means complete three divisions of love.
First combination is romantic love which consists of Passion and Intimacy. Second combination is companionate love which is shaped from intimacy and commitmet. Third combination would be fatuous love which consists of commitment and passion. Fouth division and the most complete division which is considered as the true love is consummate love which consists of those three division of love; passion, intimacy and commitment. From those four combination, what would be the fittest one for Othello’s love to Desdemona?
First, by marrying Desdemona, Othello then automatically declares that he has commitment love for Desdemona. Second, as it shown in the movie how passionate Othello to touch or even finally to have sexual intercourse with Desdemona shows that Othello indeed has the second division of Sternberg’s theory of love, that is Passion. Even though it could be seen that before committing to marital status, Othello has been described in the movie that he has already had a passion for Desdemona.
The Essay on Othello Desdemona Man Iago
Othello In the play "The tragedy of Othello," one character that I thought clearly changed during the course of the play was the main character, Othello. Othello was a man of great dignity and honor. He was noble of birth, both a captain and a general, the foremost officer in the state of Venice and the new General of Cyprus. He had the respect of all men and women surrounding him, he identified ...
Third, Does Othello have the last division that is intimacy? Yes Othello has it, but not for Desdemona. Othello has intimacy to Iago. He belives more to Iago than to Desdemona. although it is quite natural that at first Othello tries to examine Iago’s honesty. The way Othello examines iago at first does not eliminate that he has intimacy to Iago. With those situations that Othello has only two divisions of love; passion and commitment, it describes then that Othello has only Fatuous love to Desdemona.
This fatuous love which then drives him to be jealous with Cassio and after all he finally kills Desdemona. indeed it is because he does not have intimacy, love of sharing, to Desdemona. this condition is getting much easier to the end (the death of Desdemona) because Othello has intimacy to Iago. He has belief in Iago. As it is explained before then Othello has also “commitment” with Iago, surely not in marital status but as Othello consider as “commitment to keep Desdemona’s love” for him.
Ironically, Iago would like to consider Othello’s commitment as a commitment to get him in a greater position than Cassio and even than Othello. This condition how Othello has kind of “companionate love” or maybe it could be said as “fake companionate love” with Iago. It is because Iago does not have similar commitment with Othello, but acting as if he has similar commitment. Those possible situation that drives Othello to kills Desdemona and also decreases the amount of the two divisions of love that he has already had to Desdemona; Passion and Commitment.
It is implied that by killing Desdemona then automatically decreases Othello’s desire to touch or to have a sexual desire to Desdemona. It also automatically decreases the amount of commitment he has for Desdemona for the fact that he finally kills Desdemona. CONCLUSION The writer concludes that Othello has only two divisions of love; passion and commitment to Desdemona, it describes then that Othello has only Fatuous love to Desdemona. This fatuous love which then drives him to be jealous with Cassio and after all he finally kills Desdemona.
The Essay on Othello, in Love?
Was the relationship of Desdemona and Othello true love? Throughout the entire, through secrets and lies and murder even until the end one of the biggest questions that arose was the vitality of Othello Desdemona’s love. Although some readers of Othello have argued that Othello and Desdemona’s love was true, a closer examination of the way she shows empathy for him when he tells her stories ...
As it is shown again in the movie before Othello is officially dead, he realizes that he was totally wrong. Indeed this situation would possibly increase his passion and commitment for Desdemona even it would be probably added with intimacy which he did not have before. But the fact, it does not change the situation because Desdemona does not exist anymore (she is already dead).
